Is it time to talk about a NT/U21 strategy?

I'm thinking about long term planning regarding training for high potential players for the NT vs specialized lower potential specialists for U21.

Even an allstar could work just fine in a role such as that for U21. Meanwhile the high potential players could be trained in complimentary skills beside their main skills while young and become even better NT players in the end. This demands a lot of cooperation also from managers training players, and may be overly optimistic to achieve to full extent, but it is an intriguing thought.

What do the community think? And the NT/U21 coaches?

thanks for english post :)

But let me point out that Norway u21 team has very few players usable in the games every season. if we give up in training primary skills for high potential players we destroy u21 team who will drop in ranking in the last positions :)

My solution is increasing as possible primary skills and what it's needed in the first four seasons. when the player is 22 yo, then we can focus on the growth needed for senior team for the ones who have proper potential. many players are ready only when they're 27/28 years old, this means 6-7 season to prepare them. it seems enough.

But then you have to train them outside position when they have a high salary. U21 would still get players, although their potential will not be enough for NT.

I agree with tuddu, Primary skills are a "must" for u-21 players. Users aren't too much in Norway, so probably a talented players can't be substituted by another one, and you don't need to waste this pool of talent.

A great U-21 hasn't so low potential players. For Example, under "all star" level it's very difficult to found someone in the biggest and strongest u-21 teams and more you can develop your player in primary skills, more he will become important. It's like 100m. First one who arrives win, and you've 4 seasons to arrive.

Training outside position when salary is high it's a problem for everyone, but sometimes it depends on what you need and what you like to have with that player. For Example a well trained big-man after U-21 needs only 1vs1 SF-PF training except primary skills, to increase his value ingame. If you like to have a PF, you will train OD/Passing, but's your decision. Vice Versa for PG.

This kind of thinking can be done in a country with not so much users, like Norway. In other countries competition and big "talent pool" will give to their coaches different and stronger and useful players for every situation,so you may have a internal SF, a perimetral PF, a Passing PG, a defending SG and so on...

if you stop training main skills in the first 4 years you will have uncomplete players for european competition and u21 team will decrease its strenght and would not be able to compete at maximum of its possibilities.

if you think anyway that's a good choice for getting sustainable salary players in order to create stronger senior national team players without going bankrupt I don't agree but i can accept it. you give up u21 team results for hypothetical better results in the senior team.

One more thing: I'm Italy u21 and NT teams coach assistant and I can ensure you that 99% of players who get senior team have been called by u21 team and trained at their best in first four seasons. other skills have been developed once they're 22yo. Similarly for Iceland and Nigeria, both teams I did look after in the past.
