JW City Bulls 85 - 98 Glenelg Tigers

Glenelg dominated this game early before a late charge from JW's. It wasn't enough however as the Tigers ran out comfortable 13 point winners. Interestingly we saw the reappearance of the 2-3 zone......something that amazes me as i think it is terribly ineffective (and i've played it with Legendary & prodigious OD guys manning the guard spots and a SF with high ID). It's been a hot topic in the Fishbowl forums recently and once again it was a defence used by a losing team.

3 Votes - Joona Komsi 24pts 9 ass 5 reb

The Finnish Freak was outstanding in running the point for Glenelg. He not only top scored for his team but also had 9 assists, 0 turnovers and shot at a decent clip. Great to see a PG earning the 3 votes.

2 Votes - Bernabé da Gudiña 22pts 7 reb

I would have liked to see a few more boards from the big Spaniard (it almost cost him a vote) but in the end the fact that he topped the +/- and shot an impresive 10-16 was enough to get him the 2.

1 vote - Ðuro Cvoro 16 points 17 reb +6

This may come as a bit of a surprise but Cvoro was a beast on the boards did a decent job of keeping his man quiet and in the end got the vote because his Trekkie teammate Joel Vulcan shot a terrible 13-33.

Western Titans 95 - 83 Slam !

A cracking contest in this one that saw the Titans pull away in the last 1/4 and win by 12 after the margin was only 2 points at the last change. In a somewhat unusual twist the 3 vote getter from this game is a member of a losing team.

3 Votes - Ciro Bertocco 35pts 10reb 6 ass

A fantastic all around performance in a losing side. Note only were the base states good but Ciro also kept his man very quiet (2-11) but he shot the ball well himself nailing 14 of his 33 attempts. if his 3 point shooting had of been a little more accurate it would have been a inning effort from him.

2 Votes - Uditi Samdup 18pts 15reb 3 ass

Slammin Samdup was great on the boards, efficient from the floor and helped keep his opponent to just 25% shooting. He's been a prolific vote winner this season with 10 this season and his good form continued this week.

1 Vote - Pablo Lobato 15pts 10ass 5 reb

A rock solid game from the Titans PG saw him edge out their leading scorer for the final vote. In the end he put up better numbers against better opposition and that got him the vote.

Billy Hoyles Boys 88 - 97 Chelsea Seagulls 88 - 97

Despite leading or equaling Chelsea in every category in the ratings aside from rebounding Billy Hoyle's Boys were unable to get the win. With 200k of salary sitting out injured and some gameshape issues surround some of my new acquisitions it was always going to be a tough ask and after getting slapped around early the Boys were unable to make up ground late in the last 1/4.

3 Votes - Gianfrancesco Lucia - 22pts 16 reb 2blk 2 stl

Again the 3 votes goes to the losing team. Lucia was the leading rebounder and scorer in the game, went 10-14 from the field and played every minute of the game due to Kumans injury and the sale of Barzdis.

2 Votes - Jared Sherwin 20pts 6reb 4 ass

Really tough to work out the votes behind Lucia. Sherwin gets the nod for the 2 because he had the highest +/- in the game. He did foul off in 22 minutes but when he was on the court he scored at a great clip and did enough else 3 blocks to go with the reb & ass to get the 2 votes.

1 Vote - Garth Larbi 20pts 11 reb

Snuck in for the 1 vote because he was shaded by Lucia in the important areas at PF. Given Chelsea played 3-2 he wasn't entirely responsible for Lucias dominance so i got him in for 1 vote ahead of Bergman who missed out because of his poor shooting.

With Duffill scoring an 18.0 and dropping 37 points on the Sultanator last week while being forced by his coach to play all 48 minutes in the blowout he is now clear of everyone but the Fan man. He just needs one point to secure the season five "Ky Smeltz Fishbowl East MVP Award". With Xie and Tome now falling behind they are left battling it out now just for 3rd spot. I will list all the top overall candidates in the main thread.

Fishbowl East Season Five Round Ten MVPs

Da Fat Boy Slim vs. CROCKERS 101 - 72

COC has added some players of late and now has three $40,000+ guards on his roster. Sadly his best big man is about a tenth as good as that and with Duffman penetrting inside at will COC was left very limp. Mind you, with prominent (medium) inside scoring I don't think there are too many teams in the East that can stop DFBS's inside attack.

3 Kye Duffill Da Fat Boy Slim 30 PTS 25 REB. While beating up on a $13k SF in bad GS isn't that impressive, his match rating of 17.5 is. An ABBL standard player and this may lock up his first "Ky Smeltz MVP Award".

2 Salvatore Mariotti Da Fat Boy Slim 20 PTS 14 REB 15.5 rating. The second part of the punishing attack was impressive for being even more efficient than Duffill hitting 10/14 baskets and doing it all in much less time actually gave him an argument that HE was the true MVP. Also beat up on a weakling though.

1 Riho Pärn CROCKERS 25 PTS. The Spearmint Rhino (A local strip club for those that don't know) did his best to keep the contest close but with McPhail turning into McFail in this game it was turned into a bit of a blowout in the second.

Western Titans vs. Melbourne Goldfish 103 - 117

This all-Calamari affair probably wont affect the table so much but with both teams wanting to feature their stars there was a lot of pride on the line. The big names didn't disappoint with Udi and Xie both having big games. The Goldfish must have been worried early when six minutes in their star big man Angel went down injured leaving just two bigs for the rest of the match, but they hung in and were able to hang on for the win.

3 Xie Guanzheng Melbourne Goldfish 42 PTS 13.5 rating. The Master Chef was sizzling hitting 7 of 14 three pointers and scored double the top Titan and as usual he also had a smorgasboard of stats including rebounds, assists, steals and a block.

2 Uditi Samdup Western Titans 20 PTS 17 REB 3 BLK 15.5 rating. The Kid was close to unstoppable but a massive amount of turnovers and too many bad shots from the guards meant he just didn't get enough ball.

1 Norbert Carey Western Titans 18 PTS in 17 minutes. While it was a cameo roll while Norbert was on the Titans were winning with his teriffic shooting (7/10).

Glenelg Tigers vs. Haggards 125 - 106

This was a huge game with both of these teams having a great chance to take a finals place with a win here (and put me out of it where I probably belong). Haggards looked at the impressive inside attack of Glenelg and decided to test the 2/3 zone, with the typical results. The Glenelg bigs still hit numbers like 8/8 and 9/12 and the guards were able to hit a good percentage as well. The 2/3 zone sucks but these sort of tests are what PL games are for!

3 Chinh Tôn Glenelg Tigers 27 PTS 11 AST. With the 2/3 zone putting 0 pressure on the Glenelg Tigers' guards they were able to have a MASSIVE 38-19 assist advantage and Ton had the most as well as being the high scorer.

2 Fan Chung Ling Glenelg Tigers 26 PTS 18 REB. It wasn't just the assists where the Glenelg Tigers dominated but on the rebounds as well, which is supposed to be the one thing a 2/3 zone helps with. A special vote of shame for Haggards $130,000 Tomé Salgueiro who could only grab 9.

1 Leigham Phillips Haggards. 20 PTS 8 REB 7 AST. No-one on Haggards shot that well but he did all the other things that no-one else on the team seemed to want to do - rebound and pass.

Fishbowl East Season Five Round Ten MVPs Part Two

Northcote Slammers vs. Chumunga 104 - 89

CUM has spent $4,000,000 recently on new players so they would dominate right? Wrong, they are still planning for the future and while these MVPs will be dominators one day, for now they are just good. Northcotes late season purchases are much more modest but a $70,000 PG is probably more useful than trainees. It was really cool to see CUM throw the FCP but I bet they wish the Slammers didn't have their new PG.

3 Pier Giorgio Masetti Northcote Slammers 18 PTS 11 REB. He shot well (7/10) and also added a deuce of each of assists, steals and blocks while often facing CUM's best player Sultan.

2 Selçuk Sultan Chumunga. His team lost. His opponent was MVP. He shot 4/13. Total 9 points. "C-Cat, Yoda has lost his mind." So how does he get 2 MVP points? Well he was the game high rebounder. He also had 8 steals as a PF! Serious, nearly a triple double with steals as the third. Impresses me!

1 Narcís Guraya Northcote Slammers. I love guys that can make an all around contribution. While Doherty scored more and wanted the last point, NG had 13 PTS 8 REB 9 AST was +2.5 in ratings and had the best +/- in the match.

Billy Hoyles Boys vs. Slam ! 104 - 83

ABBL vs maybe relegator, a slaughter right? Wrong! BHB are still wracked by injuries and Slam ! are preparing to try and avoid relegation in division II so it wasn't a 50 point blowout. However BHB did take control early, shot the ball well and had a classic game from their star Mikey Bergman .

3 Mikey Bergman Billy Hoyles Boys 36 PTS 18.0 rating. Everyone in the league except abigfishy considers him the best SG in the league and this is the sort of performance that shows why. Unstoppable.

2 Alejandro Ascariz Slam ! 30 PTS 17 REB. Slam ! usually likes big men with wages of $350,000 or $180,000 so the must be pleased that such a "cheap" player can perform so well.

1 Mai Chongzheng Billy Hoyles Boys 14 PTS 7 AST 7 REB 4 STE. Outstanding all around contribution from the classy SF.

JW City Bulls vs. Chelsea Seagulls 99 - 90

Chelsea knew this would be difficult. The game was very close throughout with Chelsea having small leads for most of the game up until 6 minutes to go when they had a 5 point lead. With 1:39 to go Chelsea were still up 1 and what followed was the most pathetic and disgusting display of incompetence that the coach wanted to sack all of them. All the Seagulls did for the last minute was foul JW and miss shot after shot. JW well deserved the win, his players are not gutless chokers.

3 Liang Wai Yuen JW City Bulls 25 PTS 21 REB. But that wasn't the main thing, he took former NT player and division II MVP candidate Sherwin, pulled his pants down and spanked him. 1/7 for 3 points in 44 minutes. Sherwin was very close to being listed for $1 after this.

2 Joel Vulcan JW City Bulls 16 PTS 7 AST 7 REB. Long time team hero Vulcan came up big under pressure in the closing minutes of the game when things were down to the wire making free throws and guarding all three missed 3 pointers in the last half a minute.

1 Rober Forbes Chelsea Seagulls 26 PTS. High scored for the game but totally vanished at crunch time like the rest of his spineless team.

Well done to to Kye Duffill of Da Fat Boy Slim who is now officially the winner of the Ky Smeltz MVP Award for season five.

The battle is still on for second and third with Fan Chung Ling just needing one point to lock up second and Xie Guanzheng looking very likely to be third but with Mikey Bergman, Alejandro Ascariz and Tome Salgueiro still having a chance.

Well it was no surprise but well done to our season six MVP Kye Duffill of Da Fat Boy Slim. In second place and the only player within a mile was Fan Chung Ling of the Glenelg Tigers. Tied for third the two elete Shooting Guards from the East Xie Guanzheng of Melbourne Goldfish and Mikey Bergman of Billy Hoyles Boys. Several other stars in the top 10 including the brilliant Udi Samdup, JW's star Liang Wai Yuen and I am very happy to say my own original player, Oliver Ðuričko.

Well done by the MVPs and I will update those eligible for voting for the All-Fishbowl teams.
