Posting my idea in (10429.4) here as a suggestion.

The ability to add a nickname would be an amazing perk. In order to keep it manageable for GMs (since nicknames would definitely need to be approved), make it a supporter feature and allow it only for very special occasions (e.g. player wins league MVP, one player from a team that wins the national tournament).

P.S. If this gets implemented, I want a free nickname for suggesting the idea.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Given the stated principle that supporter features should enhance the in-game experience, but not provide a competitive advantage...

I suppose you could make the case that nicknamed players might be (irrationally) valued more than ordinary players (I seem to remember "Homer Simpson" selling for a ridiculous amount in HT), and so end up selling at a premium on the transfer market, therefore providing supporters with a competitive advantage.

Good point.

Perhaps it could be made so that the nicknames were not permanent changes to a player's name, and only seen by that manager (not public, thereby releasing the GMs from policing the names)?

great idea.
Removing their nickname when their enter the transfer market is also a very good solution to the problem (if there is one)

They are not your friends; they dispise you. I am the only one you can count on. Trust me.

I don't think the nickname should 'disappear' when the player is sold. Just make the nickname only visible for supporters. If the new owner is not a supporter, he'll only see the real name.

I agree, however, that the nicknames should be awarded to players who have accomplished something important. Say, for example, one guy makes 10 three pointers in a row without a single mistake in competitive matches. Next time you check the player's profile, a little pop-up window would show up offering you to choose among (let's say) five different UNUSED nicknames (the system should have control over that). Needless to say the nicknames should be related to the deed the player has accomplished. Once you select the desired nickname for your player, you have 3 different options: see the nickname inserted between name and surname, just the nickname or the original name without the nickname. Supporters would always have the chance to change those preferences just by accessing the player profile page.
