I'd like to be able to see a list of available federations (even a randomly generated list of 20) rather than have to think of what federations might exist and then searching for what they might have called it.

But there is a thread where people advertise their federations by name. I think it is in BB global. You are a supporter so you can search for it. It probably needs to be stickied and/or added to the useful threads thread.
