In germany we had currently a discussion about the ranking system, and how the team who play relegation catch up to the teams who don't partcipate or flew out in round one. When our observation is right, it would be nice, when it gives a slight bonus for the final place so that 5 placed team get at least the points which the 6/7 team could earn in the relegation.

I think that at the end of each season, you combine the conferences, so you get a list of 1 > 16 in order of best to worst performed in that league that season. Then I think that 1st should get a bunch of ranking points, and should also get a bunch of money. Then 2nd should get a slightly smaller bunch of ranking points and slightly smaller amount of money. And so one and so forth until you get to 16th that gets only a few ranking points and a tiny bit of money.

I think this would solve the problem you are talking about, and would also solve people's issue with 5th place being unpleasant to finish. It would also make people fight to come first rather than be happy to come 4th for a better draft pick and still have income in the playoffs.

i think solving 5th place problem on a economical base, is much more complicated then this. Thi would be more a cosmetic tweak, the other thing is a very complex theme because you have variables you can not count with money(safe of relegation, better draft pick etc.)

Everything can be given a dollar value. That's what insurance people are for :P

The money given and the ranking points given would depend on country and what league you are in (Div 3, div 2, div 1 etc). I know it isn't the best solution, but I think this is a solution that could be easily implemented, and a solution that most people would be happy with for a long time.

You really think BBs have that much money to hire a actuarial specialist to figure that out?

Besides it is never fair in this system especially when you only play the other conference once and your conference twice. There are some very unbalanced leagues out there (one conference a lot stronger than the other) and teams should not be punished just because they were in the tougher conference hence had to play more tough games but will end up with a worse record than a team from the weaker conference.

I think it goes further than the relegation match. I was surprised to see a team promote into my division I series this season and already have a ranking of 5, ahead of my 8th ranking, in spite of the fact that I was a playoff team in division I last season.

But I beat him on Saturday and now I am the 7th ranked team. ;-)

the ranking goes about few seasons, and is based heavily on the cup where you was pretty succesful ;) but thats another thing.

I think you misunderstood me. I was complaining that my ranking was too low, based on a division II team that just promoted. The division II team has a ranking of 5 vs my 8 to start the season? I did better than him in the cup last season and the season before we went just as far. In fact, I knocked off some heavy hitters (by Canadian standards) in the cup the past two season whereas he had an easier road.

Sure, he had a perfect record in division II last season where I was 12-10 in division I. But I still think something is wrong when a promoting team ranks #5 in the country. He should have to earn that ranking by beating higher ranked teams first.

Why all of you want higher rank? What is influenced by it? I know only one major disadvantage of higher ranking, but don't know the advantages.
