Between 48 and 75 minutes approximately. However there is a random component, so unexpected results often happen.

The exact number is debated.
People's guesses on the ideal range generally fall between 55 and 80 minutes.

My personal opinion is 60-65 minutes is the ideal number.

Actually, the number is not debated, and it's not a guess. There is a pretty good empirical study out there showing that playing around 65 minutes, give or take 5 or 10, is optimal for game shape. 48 is definitely too few, and 80 is probably too much.

Cool. I haven't seen the empirical study. Do you have a link?

Every time it comes up on the forum there is a wide variety of responses which is why I provided the caveat. Of course, I should know by now that the general noise of the help forum is often of little help.

Manon has got the chart. I might have had the numbers slightly off -- the chart seems to peak at 55 rather than 65 minutes. It is still an approximation to the extent to which it doesn't monitor GS sublevels, but I just wanted to point out that we have better information than a random guess between 48 and 80.
