I was wondering which player takes the most shots in this offence?
I run it most of the time but find that sometimes my PG takes the most shots, sometimes it is the SG and other times it is the SF.
Just wondering if any of you know, or have an opinion on, which position is best to place your best shooter, second best shooter and third best shooter.

I've played Run and Gun for all but 5 games during 2 full seasons worth of games (started 2 seasons ago, 2 games into the season), and from what I've seen, place your third best shooter at SF, because SF still takes less shots. Something seems different, becausethe first third of this season, it seems my SG's taken more, but last season it feels as though my PG shot a lot more. I'll post some stats from a pure Run and Gun offense this season.

PG
Game One: 24 shots
Game Two: Innacurate- player got half SG, half PG for a game.
Game Three: 18 shots
Game Four: 21 shots
Game Five: 25 shots
Game Six: Innacurate- player positions were mixed up because one player played minutes at SG and PF, one player swapped PG to SG, a SG to PG, etc.
Game Seven: 36 shots
SG
Game One: 34 shots
Game Two: Innacurate- see PG note.
Game Three: 43 shots
Game Four: 22 shots
Game Five: 33 shots
Game Six: Innacurate- see PG note.
Game Seven: 34 shots

This statistic would show that SG takes more shots per game; around 34 a game as opposed to 26 a game for PG
Reviewing my statistics from last season though, my SG's took a total of 506 shots, but my PG's took a total of 489 shots.

Indeed, your shooter SHOULD take more shots each game from the Shooting Guard position; but I do find that the coach does not swap the PG as often; my calculations show that in the games above not labeled "innacurate", the starting PG plays almost 6 more minutes a game than the starting SG.

I'm going to go with, put your best shooter as SG, second best at PG, third best at SF, but I recommend putting your starting SG at starter/backup at the very least to get him as many minutes in game as possible, providing him the time for the shots.

Cheers for that. Would you consider putting your best shooter at point guard because the point guard might often be a worse defender than the shooting guard?

Does the opposing players OD have anything to do with the number of shots they take? Just wondering... Cos I notice the same fluctations with my own players

just put your best 3 shooters on the court, they will find a way to score no matter which position they play.

Typically, the player who has the best match-up on offense will take most of the shots. That's not always your best shooter.

To be honest, my best shooter does play at Point Guard, he just gets very unlucky most of the time.

Calling him my best shooter is based on player skills, not percentage of shots or anything.
Best Shooter/PG = 9 JS, 7 JR
2nd Best Shooter/SG = 8 JS, 7 JR
3rd Best Shooter/SF = 8 JS, 3 JR

Well, technicality there. I play my player that I do at SF because I want to have a safe way to back up my guards from the bench; I could put a much better shooter there than 8 JS and 3 JR, 8 JS 5 JR,5 JS and 8 JR, 6 JS 7 JR, etc. but he's there because more often than not I face an inside offense and he has good ID compared to the rest of my options.

And vice, that's about right from what I've seen- PG's will sometimes have a better OD than SG's, and the SG's will be able to play offense better against a lower OD.

So which position do you think (PG, SG or SF) is normally guarded with the most outside defence?
So which one of those players normally has the most outside defence in your experience?
Or does it vary too much from team to team?

Also, assuming that the opponents player at PG, SG and SF are all exactly the same, and all my players at those positions are exactly the same as each other except for JS and JR. Which position would take the most shots?
I.e. if the matchup was the same at every position, does any position take more shots by default?

It varies from team to team; I mean, my PG's have the most OD, followed by SG's, then my SF's and Pf's have about the same OD, heaven knows why, and Centers the least. I've seen teams where the Sg's have more than Pg's, and teams where the SF's far outmatch the rest of the team, and have better OD. It just depends on the team.

If you asked me, I'd say that in a Run and Gun offense with the same matchups at every position, the Shooting Guards would take a couple more shots than the Point Guards, and the Small Forwards would have the least shots. But that's just an assumption from what I've seen.

I would think that it varies greatly from team to team...Especially in a DII league, I think (if they're playing M2M) that their best defender is normally going to try to match up with your best perceived shooter since we can change defensive match-ups these days..
