I was looking around a few leagues and couldn't find a single point guard that averaged close to 10 or even 9 assists a game. Whereas there's loads of players with ridiculously high averages on other stats, esp. rebounding. This is possibly an outcome of the way the game engine works but I'm wondering if its possible to have a Stockton-esque PG in this game at all. Any thoughts on this lack of freewheeling PGs in this game?

In my expierence most teams don't have great passing and offensive flow so their team doesn't get many assists.
Also, a lot of teams play outside attack tactics rather than inside attack tactics and in my opinion/experience you get more assists for players when you play an inside oriented tactic.

Perhaps, but the stats should still be higher than they are. There should at least be some PGs with close to 10 APG for the season.

I didn't have to look far to counter your point anyway. Check out this player (6849654) from a team in my league. They play look inside with decent flow by the standards of my league. Shouldn't he be dishing out a few more assists?

The frequency of players with tremendous or higher rebounding or jump shot far surpasses those with even prominent or higher passing from what I can see. Passing is being insufficiently developed through all of BB. I think in a previous state of the sim, passing wasn't particularly useful. It seems useful to me now, and has since I started playing a few seasons ago. My passing is still poor, though.

Do you know the passing skill of this player? It could be average passing or less which would easily explain why he doesn't get a lot of assists. In his last 5 games (scrimmages included) he has got 9, 15, 5, 7, 12 assists. And when he got the 5, 7 and 12 assists he was only playing around 35 minutes.

So he is still getting a pretty high amount of assists.

I believe you're right and in fact I have been thinking about this.

My hypothesis is that it is more complicated to compare the effect of passing compared to most other skills. For instance your rebounding can easily be compared with the oponents rebounding in order to calculate the likelihood of getting a rebound. Likewise for inside defense compared to inside scoring and so on. But, passing is harder to analyse and therefore people can't valuate it and choose to go for players with skills that they "understand".

The consequence of that of course is that players with passing skills becomes less attractive then they should and therefore less frequent as you say.

Exactly. Rebounding and points are easy to see on the boxscore and can be directly associated with an increase in skill. So higher rebounding skill will show more rebounds and a user will notice this because rebounds are easily quantifiable. However, passing is different because the only real measure of passing we have is assists. But you need to keep in mind that there would be a lot of great passes that are made but the player that received the ball gets a turnover or misses the shot and so the pass doesn't count as an assist. Consequently, a lot of really good passes don't get shown on the boxscore at all because many times the shooter will miss, and so players think that passing is overrated but it is actually a very valuable skill to have.

You can't count that player either lol.
His salary is so high because he is just a passing machine. Rest of the skills are probably crap.
And he is playing on a bot team lol.

It'll be prominent or higher most likely. I have players with respectable passing who don't average close 4 APG. At least he's producing 6 a game. Whereas a player with prominent or higher rebounding would be pulling down over 15 boards a game.

To stajan: Could it be that managers haven't trained passing as much because it didn't seem to pay enough dividend? While rebounding did, for example.
