It sounds like George would give up significant leverage in negotiating his next contract if he would agree to be traded:

Before his flight to Dallas, [George's agent] told ESPN.com by phone: "We're not trying to block anything. The issue is that if he agrees to this deal, he has to give up his Bird rights. To lose that tool in today's world of free agency is a difficult thing to do. In this day and age, the sign-and-trade is a valuable tool that I don't want to lose for Devean. We're not trying to cause a problem. Teams have to do what's in their best interest. Sometimes players do, too. I hate to cause grief, but I have to do what's best for Devean. It's not a power play. My job is to protect him."

Easy for you to sit back and say a guy should give that leverage up. Especially when the payoff is half a season playing with Wince Carter.

( and it's not like Dallas fans should be excited about a trade that leaves them with a veteran-stacked team which is just an injury away from irrelevance. ]

I'm agree. I'm on the side that says the difference between Kidd and Harris (some even argue it's not an upgrade at all) doesn't nearly compensate for what they would give up in depth. If I was a Mavs fan, I'd be happy George saved my team's management from themselves.

I wouldn't worry about that. Basketball is much more popular Worldwide than American football.

there's a small difference: in europe, nobody gives a damn about american football. :)

At one point in time, basketball was mostly a game played in YMCA's throughout the US and Canada. Eventually it became popular worldwide.

That's not to say it will happen with American football, but I'm sure the NFL thinks its can expand its interests/viewership/merchandising overseas.

true basketball is much more popular then football, the compare was just of course that nba wants to do that, i mean we have own leagues as well, i mean and i dont know nobody following MLS to give you another compare ;)

anyway i would like it, but 5 brandnew teams who and where is the other question.
