I am a little bit fuzzy on what stamina actually affects throughout the game. Does it change the amount of minutes a player spends on the court or does low stamina cause their productivity to decrease after long durations of activity.
I am curious because I wonder if training stamina is a necessity or if I can put it off to train other skills at the moment.

Stamina affects:
-the minutes a starter gets, because if his stamina is horrible, he'll tire out quickly and he'll have to be subbed out more often.
-the performance, because the more tired the player is, the worse the performance.

So yes your assumptions are both correct. If your players have low stamina, then you might want to consider training stamina this week, since there are only 2 games.

I used to train stamina a lot for many years during 2-game-weeks and yes, this way your starters will play more. It is not approved that they do play better as well.
But there is one downside of good stamina that leads me to not been training stamina for two seasons now. And that is the huge amount of minutes starters will play. In case you rely on your better players and want to start them twice a week they probably end up with 90 minutes or so. That is a threat to game shape. I would prefer my better players to play 35 minutes with good GS instead of 45 minutes with bad GS.
Also, since stamina is dropping among my players I can't really tell they play worse at the end of the game. None of them is under respectable though.

Isn't it better to play your starter as a backup in the second game? If your players are of similar quality, it won't make any difference. And if your starter is much better.. he'll play more minutes anyway.

A backup doesn't get more minutes just because he is better (hope thats what you meant). He will ony come into the game if the starters are tired or you lead by enough points during the 4th quarter.

But the other thing is correct. If your players have similar quality the you can play them one game as starter and one as backup.

In my experience, the quality has no impact on how many minutes a player gets.

The coach will switch the starter with the substitute whenever the substitute is more effective compared to the starter.

This is not necessarily true if you're using Strictly Follow the Depth Chart. It is perhaps true that if the starter is tired the coach may decide to sub him out and get the backup to play. However, when it comes to a close game (especially the 4th quarter), it is mostly the starters who play most of the time, not because the coach want them to, but because substitutions is set as SFDC. So in my opinion the effect of the stamina is less evident when using SFDC (but I'm certain there is an effect, just not as much). In this way, in a close game, even if the backup has better skills and everything else compared to the starter (who sucks), it'd most likely be the starter who'll be playing because the substitution is set so.

Thats true, I totally agree here. But one more thing I wanted to mention. With SFDC it happened to me, that in a very close game for the last 3 minutes my coach decided to bring the backups (who were really worse compared to my starters). Just because it was time to give the starters a rest.
