I could well be missing something in my tactics, but I was wondering if there's any way to fit into the strategy to play the most effective player, regardless of whether they start or not.

I know this is kind of unclear- for example, in my last game, my starting SF just did not have a good game- 4/17 from the field and a -17 +/-, while my backup shot much better and had a +7 rating. Is there any way to make sure the game plays my backup in the major minutes if he's having a better game than the starter?

But in this case your backup might have only played well because he faced the opposing team's backup. It's entirely possible that your backup would have done worse than your starter when facing better opposing players.

But you might be able to change who gets selected by using the "let coach decide" option. What were you using? I don't have any experience with that since it tends to screw up the training minutes distribution, but maybe it would have allowed the coach to insert your backup more frequently.

Have you tried de Isolation tactics? That should be what you are looking for, although it may not mean that is focused on the player that you thought was the best option...

Oh I just meant to use that as an example, not the final point. Especially with my former starting forward there were times when he was 1-10 or so and I wondered if there was any kind of advanced tactic that would help the coach to realize that my starter just wasn't playing well that game and should sit out. I might give the "let coach decide" option a try in Private League play, but I'm training 2 potential NT guys and don't want to mess with their training at the same time. Oh well.

It really wouldn't be beneficial to replace poor performing starters with their reserves with the current engine. It works strictly off of ratings (which are multiplied by form and compared to opponent). In other words, the engine doesn't make players have "bad games." Momentum is not a part of the engine for individual players. If you feel your backups may actually be better or it is too close to tell, "let coach decide" will let the engine choose which player is better. However, it is very likely that the defender is simply better than your player and there isn't much you can do other than changing tactics or buying a better player.
