It's a German letter, usually called "sharp s" or "sz". In Switzerland, we don't use that particular letter though (even though we write in German all the time...) and replace if by a double s, which would be the best replacement in English, too. Also, in German, the letter v is often (but not always) pronounced as a f. So, you'd pronounce his name "Foss-loch" with loch as in Loch Ness ;)
