In the first game of my season I had a 20 year old SF who led my team in scoring with 22 points and shot 50% from the floor. I obviously played him again in my next game and he was injured within 2 minutes and missed the entire game, but was fine in time for my next game. However, he shot 1-11 and then 3-13 in the game following. His backup (another young guy) shot 1-9 and 1-4 in the same two games. Granted, they've done alright with steals and rebounds and such, but I'm getting NO production out of them offensively and that needs to change considering who I have coming up in my league.

I have a SG that's coming off the bench for me right now, but still leads my team in scoring. He's short, he's old, but he's shooting pretty well and contributing statistically in other categories and I'm wondering if he's a viable option to start at SF instead.

I have a game tonight that I feel like I should win, so if I'm going to test it out, now's the time. My next two games after that are the #1 and #2 teams in my league so I'd like to have my starters set before then rather than testing players out against them. So, people with far more knowledge and experience than I, what do you all think? Play the SG tonight?

Yes you can try him, but make sure that your starting PG and SG have an at least respectable OD, because your SF (former SG) is inept at it.

Just my .02... I'm not that more expert than you

I would never, ever have this SG as a SF in my team. His atrocious inside defense will most certainly kill you if the opponent plays inside or has an inside oriented SF. Hell, even if he doesn't it'll probably kill you anyway.

But, considering you're new to the game and from some of the things you said, you probably should read the manual. You seem to think that a player being old or short or whatever influences in his in game production, which is not true. It impacts the training portion of the game, but as far as the game engine is concerned, only the skill matters.

he looks decent for an SF for you. Defence is terrible but everything else is pretty good. I actually prefer him as a SF rather than a SG because a SG with that OD will give up a lot of points. In a tactic such as LI he may be good because of shooting, driving, handling and IS. I would play him as a SF in your game

I was mentioning the age and height of the player in regards to a more long term view. The player is old, so what I see now is what I get. He's never going to get better, and there's no room for improvement to help patch the holes in his game. Obviously, as you said, height factors into that discussion as well. I'm fully aware it doesn't translate into in-game production.

Now this player is by no means good, but I'm in deperate need of finding ANYONE who can help me out at that position. This is also my first season in the game, so while his skills may be terrible to some of you, he's actually a decent player in my league. While watching games live, I notice that he rarely has his man score on him, and regularly leads my team in +/-. He's a good shotblocker... I don't know it was just a thought.

Thanks for the opinions.

From the looks of your PF and PA, your offense looks fine, but your defense is terrible. Adding this new guy into the starting 5 isn't gonna help that.

In US D.V, I've found guys with average defense to be decent, respectable defense to be good, and above that guys are even better (obviously). Last season most of my guys had 7 defense (and good secondary defense-i.e., good ID on guards, OD on bigmen). I was tied for the best defense. If you can buy a cheap guy with defense around those levels, it would probably work out better than this guy.

I've ended up grabbing this player, and plan on starting him tonight to see how he does. He's a little bit weaker offensively, but much stronger defensively and has much more long term upside. I don't need an all star at the position, I just need someone to not shoot 4-24 or 2-15 in two games.

Thanks for the help.

I like this guy a lot better. Give him a few weeks of One on One training, to bump up that atrocious handling, and he'll be a solid D.V player for you. And if you're not training anyone else, a bit of rebounding training would help too. Both of those should at least be helped by elastic effect, so hopefully won't take too long to raise, despite his in-betweener height.

take it easy or TIE doesn't make your defence better. It makes it worse, what makes it better is the enthusiasm that you get from the TIE
