Not sure if I am correct but I think you might be getting confused.

The player you just bought is not retired, he is a Free Agent; but it is his owner who is labelled as "retired". (This is where I think you are getting confused)

If you had not placed on bid on that free agent (whose owner is retired) then you are correct he would have retired.

So yeah, that player was not retired he was a free agent with a "retired" owner.

If you get what I mean...

Good answer. The thing is the player only retires after his auction comes to an end and if there was still no bid on him. It does happen especially with really bad old centers with big primaries and all atrocious secondaries who no-one wants to pay a million dollars for.
