So last season I beat this team by 26 at home, he turned around beat me by 32 at home then I beat him by 17 in the playoffs.

If you asked me to name the one team in my division that wouldn't be my rival this season, I would have definitely said this team. But here he is, my season 19 rival.

I am more than likely to be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the rivals were determined by the closest cumulative score, so if you were +26/-32, it's a total different of -6 and fairly close. I imagine playoff games don't factor into it, but that's even less reliable than "I think I remember" and is just pure speculation.

I believe rivals are determined by how long teams are in the same league. Me for example, I'm in mine for 10 seasons or so, and so is my rival. We've always been rivals except for one or two seasons I think. Sometimes we have close games, sometimes we don't, and our ranking after a season also differs every year.
So I think league affiliation is the main reason for rivalry.

Your rival is someone in your own division, right?

I just promoted to D4 and my rival is still listed as a team from D5. I'll likely never play him again. He's already spent a few seasons in D5 and I don't see him doing anything right in order to get out of D5.

I believe one of the most important factor (or even the most important) is... number of matches played between two clubs in past ;-)
When I went to new division and I met club, with which I played in other division in past, I was almost sure that he will be my rival and in fact he was.

I had not checked it today. My bad. Last time I checked it in the middle of the night last night, it still showed the Boston Disaster. But I see now that it has changed. So this is a case of me speaking without knowing the facts. My bad.

Then this answers my question. There's another team that I played only twice that I had 2 much closer games with including an OT game. I figured they were going to be my rival.

Thanks for that.

My rival is the team I've been in the same league with for the 3rd season now, all other teams have changed on my side of the competition. I lost 5 times to this guy but beat him in the playoffs, so could be interesting.
