You get a certain amount of points each game, you get points if you win or lose. The more important the game the more points you get. You also get more points for winning a game you are not expected to win (no one really knows how they calculate this, based off salary I guess)
So if you smash a team you are 10 times better than in the first round of the cup you won't get as many points as a close lose to the best team in the country in the latter rounds of the cup.
You keep your points for 2 seasons, so if you have a bad season you won't see your rank drop as much as if you have 2 bad seasons in a row...
