Hi all,

I have a trainee that continually fouls out (9 out of 12 games). The last time he played he fouled out in 13 minutes. he is being trained as a SG and his OD is now 9. I'm training him in scrimmages and have been selecting much lower ranked teams (30000+) so he has a chance of getting 48 minutes. I have been using man on man defense. Is there a defense tactic that might be less aggressive and produce less fouls? and can anyone recommend anything else that may help him fouling out?

Cheers
Todd

He may just be an aggressive player and unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about that. You could try playing a 2-3 defense, but I only recommend it when you are playing against someone who runs LI or Low Post. His stamina level might be a factor. What is his stamina level?

Hi,

His stamina is 7. I'll give the 2-3 defense a go, the matches I play him are only scrimmages so the result doesn't matter, although at the start of the next season he will have to play some league/cup games.

Yeah, I've taken to trying to play lower teams because I've had the same problem in the past (and now I'm training out of position so that helps). One thing you might want to do is scout your opponents to see if, for example, his scrimmage PG/SG/SF draw a lot of fouls, take a lot of driving shots, or are mostly pass-first, then have your trainee defend the position of the least threatening player. But often it just doesn't matter - fouls occur in non-shooting situations quite a bit with aggressive guys and there's not a lot to do about that.

I'd definitely recommend a low pace offense, too. Something like Princeton/Low Post can stretch out your possessions so hopefully you have fewer defensive opportunities, and therefore less likelihood of fouling. I'm not sure if the box and one defenses might help if you have another player with higher OD/ID, but that's something maybe other people have more experience with.

Nah, he may be stupidly agressive but he's not really like Metta World Peace until he gets a flagrant and gets ejected for clocking someone with an elbow after a dunk, don't you know?

Cheers Thanks for that, I'll try slowing down the offense and scout the opponents more. The guy has superstar potential so I don't want to give up on him yet.

Actually that Metta World Peace play happened to me a week ago. My starting SG was driving to the basket and someone knocked him down hard! He was out for 2 weeks and now it's like, still 9-10 days...............................Actually, my play looks like a exessive contact D. Rose play.

Congratulations! You just discovered one of the great features, the "Hulk-Gene". Only a few players have this marvelous ability, you can be proud of your player.

Sarcasm off: dump him and find a better one.

Actually i think those type pf players can be extremely valuable ones with the right skills. My 18 year old draftee tends to foul alot too, so i play him at C pozition for defence, seems like he fouls less there. Even while playing at pg he grabs like 3 offensive rebound average which is sick with his skills:D And i think after ill train some Sb to him hell be absolute dominating the pf as a lock down-defender.

No problem. If he's aggressive, there's not a whole lot you can do about that, but the slow offense should help some. Good luck!
