Is it true that if you go undefeated that you will get promoted even if you don't win the Championship?

No. Firstly there has to be place in the higher league (through bot cleanup) and, secondly, you have to win your division.

Well, he did win his conference. So in the event that he doesn't win the championship, he could promote via bot cleanup.

However, there are typically few bot clean up promotions from USA D4 into D3. It requires a D3 team that is managed by a computerized player, BUT whose team finishes in a spot where they do not automatically relegate. So if the bot controlled team finishes in 8th, or loses a relegation series, then there will not be a spot for cleanup promotion. And in D3, most bot teams end up this way.

The other way bot cleanup promotion could happen would be if there is a bot team in D1 or D2. When they demote, they will demote all the way to D5/D6 (not 100% sure where). That opens up a possible slot for a non-championship team to promote from D4 (and subsequently for a non championship team to promote from D5 to D4). Honestly, I haven't looked to see if there are bots in D2, but there might be.

Of course, to be in line for bot cleanup promotion (at any level), you must win your conference, and not win the championship series (obviously). Then, those possible teams are ranked by win-loss record, and then point differential. So it's possible, but certainly it's best to win by winning the finals series. Note also that if you promote by bot cleanup, you don't get the large boost in season ticket holders that a finals winner does.

Don't you have to win the playoffs to win the conference? Coming first in the season means nothing (I thought) except for HCA.

Hmm, you know, to be honest I'm not 100% certain. I don't think you need to make the finals to be in line for bot promotion, but I don't know.

Could anyone who has promoted via bot promotion speak to this?

It goes on regular season record, so it's being top after the regular season not winning your conference final that counts.

As you know from our experience in IV.57 a couple of seasons ago. It's very possible. ;) (and if you're wondering why I'm back in IV, it's because I tanked the second half of last season). But it depends on how many D.III teams go bot, usually 5-15 spots are open. Highest PD for unbeaten teams go first.
