Well, the only substitution tactic that isn't acknowledged to be entirely bugged by the BB staff is strictly follow depth chart, so that should be the option you use.

The number of minutes your backup will play will depend on your starter's stamina, how good your backup is compared to your starter, and if you get a big lead and your bench comes in. If there's a wide gap between your starter and your backup, or if the starter has high stamina and isn't significantly worse than your backup, and you don't get a huge lead, your starter will very likely play around 40 or more minutes.

Fact is, the better the player, the more game time he will take up. If you have 2 players and start the weaker of the two, you will see the minutes tend towards 1:1 but probably 3:2 (starter:sub). If you start the stronger of the two I usually see at least 3:1.

starters: ABCDE
backups: FGHIJ

(using strictly follow depth chart)
approx 32 minutes for starters and 16 minutes for backups:
A-F-F
B-G-G
C-H-H
D-I-I
E-J-J

appox 36 minutes for starters and 12 minutes for backups:
A-F-A
B-G-B
C-H-C
D-I-D
E-J-E

if ABCDE stamina/skill is significantly higher, ABCDE will get extra minutes over FGHIJ
if the game is a blowout in the 4th quarter, FGHIJ will get extra minutes over ABCDE

If you remember me, then I don't care if everyone else forgets.

As others have stated, and I can confirm from experience, this will definitly not work when starters are better players (in my case, the difference is approx 4.5k in salary but the figures aren't big, it's 9.5k vs 5k) and especially if starters have good stamina (mine have strong and above). Again, in my case, starters have played for as much as 44 mins.

Hence why I wrote:
if ABCDE stamina/skill is significantly higher, ABCDE will get extra minutes over FGHIJ

Try reading.

You can't get minutes exact but that's the closest way.

If your starter is consistently getting 44 minutes, then you either have to:
1) use A-F-F instead of A-F-A or get a better backup
2) avoid starters with really high stamina if you're not using a fast paced offense anyway
