Eliminating the salary payments in the playoffs for the #5 seed was a good fix, but it overpowered the #5 spot and is massively penalizing teams for making the playoffs. One manager in my league thinks that 4 different teams may purposely lose via walkover in the final game this season and while this may not occur, the fact that it's viable highlights this issue.

Here's the fix: Pay 1/2 salary in weeks where you only play 1 game. Given that 2 games = 100% salary and 0 games = 0% salary, 1 game should logically = 50% salary. This could also include the all-star week but I'd be fine with keeping that week as it currently is.

I also agree that something needs to be done about this, it makes no sense for 5th place to be more desirable than 3rd or 4th. Paying half the salaries might do it, but it's a bit hard to think about it logically. Basically you're saying your players are paid half their salary.

My suggestion would be to boost the TV contract for teams participating in the playoffs. You don't have to increase it too much, just enough for the teams eliminated in the first round to break even. Or if this can end up giving too much cash to the teams with home-court advantage that get to the finals, than just a one-time "making the playoffs prize money" that would be roughly 2/3 of the average gate receipts of the teams participating in the playoffs, so that you end up getting a "normal" gate receipt for that weekend.

They'd be paid half their salaries because they're doing half a week's work. If you get paid $1000 for 40 hours, how much would you expect to be paid if you only worked 20 hours instead?

That's true. But as far as I know, professional athletes are not paid by the hour. I agree with your idea, I just think that a bonus or a tv contract boost would be easier to understand. Cheers

That is what I have been saying for ages. No massive changes needed just some tweaks. It makes sense that you aren't paying your guys while you aren't playing in the offseason (which starts earlier for 5th and 8th). But it equally makes sense that the TV stations wont be paying you while you are no longer playing and who will be buying Basketball merchandise during Football season?

Not a perfect fix but a very easy one. No salaries, but also no TV and merchandising income. For my team that would be about $300,000. Certainly takes the gloss off 5th without making it a financial disaster.

Merchandise: $ 81 295
TV Contract: $ 219 248

But that money gives a cash reserve for the regular season. I think the best idea I've seen is to add a 3rd/4th place game. At worst the loser of the match would get $400k instead of 200k and the winner would get $800k instead of $400k. It would also give the extra training day.

Just doesn't seem realistic. I know in the Olympics they have a 3rd v 4th playoff but in all professional leagues I know once you are out you ae out. There is a division II team in Australia that deliberately forefitted their last regular season match to make 5th. It is pathetic that teams are willing to forefit matches to make 5th because it is so much better than 4th or 3rd.
