In match when the game engine says for example

'Player A pulls up at the top of the key and takes a shot.'

Does this mean that this player was left open or had an open shot?

Why do you have to assume he was open? He still could have been covered.

Agreed. He was moving with the ball (either a drive or receiving the ball coming around a screen) then stopped for the shot. He might be guarded or might not be.

Yes i was thinking that, sometimes you see , player A slips off a screen ....blah blah blah....., guarded closely by player b , but other times you see no player guarding , im studying data from matches and need to see who is guarding who with different types of defences. I guess i can never tell.
