This season, I finished 4th in my group, but won the first match of the playoffs and most likely I will proceed to the finals where I think I'll lose the promotion.
So about next year's attendance: What's going to be more important? The 4th place in regular season or reaching the finals in the playoffs?

Reaching the finals, even if you lose, gives a large boost to season ticket holders. That will be reflected in a nice boost to your attendance next season.

I've reached the finals 5 straight times now (losing each) and I've found my fans care more about the regular season record than getting to the finals (had a 12-10 record getting to the finals, and much fewer STH than other seasons when I've had a better record). Just one manager's observation.

Not sure I agree with this.

I finished 4th a few seasons back. 12-10 record. Advanced to the finals where I lost a nailbitter the final game and in the following year's survey I was getting only 2.5/3 stars for my previous seasons performance and my attendence was actually down (I had promoted the previous season). I finished 5th last season. 12-10. Missed the playoffs (obviously) and I'm also getting 2.5/3 stars for the previous season and my attendence is down.

Perhaps your 3 consecutive promotions before that meant that you couldn't go too much farther up in STH. Did you track STH? But perhaps you're right, there's probably also an effect of the previous season record.

I know that hte first full season I played, I made the finals and lost (2nd best record leaguewide). Had a ~400 STH boost. Next season I won the finals, and promoted (best league record overall). STH increased 500.

Then, when I joined the D3 I'm currently in, we had a team who lost in the finals 4 times. He had a big arena, and consistently filled it, even with strong pricing. Perhaps it's just the strong record overall?

I never thought to track STH unfortunately. Plus it was only 2 promotions, not 3. Still, it didn't seem right to me.

Well, up to that point in the Hounds history, you'd promoted 3 times (not all in consecutively, yes). Maybe there's some rough limit on STH, and you were pushing up near it? I dunno.

As with everything attendance-wise, "it's complicated." And really, I'm not 100% sure how much the STH reflect/influence attendance.

Aye, and this season promises to be #6. I ought to win my conference finals without much difficulty, but don't anticipate being able to take 2 games from the other conference's likely winner.
