I know that due to how this game works, locking in a salary for a player for multiple years would break the game. Still I think there is a way to make it work.

What you could do is have an option for every player on your team to sign a contract for 1 - 6 years at the beginning of each season. But instead of a frozen salary you get a discounted salary. And the longer the contract, the higher the discount. For instance you could have:

1 seasons - 1% discount
2 seasons - 2% discount
3 seasons - 4% discount
4 seasons - 7% discount
5 seasons - 10% discount
6 seasons - 15% discount

Of course the down side of this is that you are stuck with the player no matter what. You can't sell or fire him. I think having contracts as an option would emphasize long term planning.

It would also help people that are forced to sell prized players that they drafted but can't afford anymore.

yer not a bad idea - i dont think ive seen this kind of idea before, so good thinking there.

i think maybe the contract lengths are too long? 6 seasons is wayyyyyyyy too long to have a contract for in Buzzerbeater. Some people move from Div V to Div II in that time!

In my opinion, i think the maximum time a contract should go for would be 2 seasons, and even then i think thats a bit long. That would be the exterme in my opinion.

I like the discounted salary idea - maybe the %'s need a bit of tweaking. You could even make them go either way.

ie: Short term contracts attract a positive discount. eg: If you sign a guy to a 2 week contract, then he wants 1.2 X his salary.

This could help alleviate the problem of rent-a-bigs... where teams just buy players for short term stints to make a run at the playoffs/cup.... The current Game shape measure's that are in place are new, so I think we should see the outcome of these first before the introductino of any new anti-rent-a-big measures.

Anyways, thats a side note.... back to your idea. I like it. you could also incorporate added complexity, such as Options for extension.

I dont think it has to 'lock in the salary', because obviously there are skill pops/drops, but certainly it should lock in a 'salary discount'.

Its certainly an idea worth investigating. Im just trying to think of any negative impacts to be the game....

I like the idea of paying more for short contracts if we were to require all players to sign a contract!

What you could do is the second a player is acquired, either via the transfer list or by draft pick, they go into a special "injured" status to where they can't play until they sign a contract. If they go four weeks without a contract then they get released.

Then we need to figure out what the average amount of time a player spends on a team is and make that the baseline length of a standard contract (you pay the normal amount). If the player signs a longer than average contract they get to lock in a salary discount for the length of the contract. The longer the contract the higher the discount. Conversely, the shorter the contract, the higher the salary you will have to pay will be. So yea, a two week contact could be 120% of his normal salary while a 3 year contract could be 90% of normal salary.
