The very first JOSE RIZAL CUP is on the way to hit the Philippine Buzzerbeater Community.

Inspired by the LAPU-LAPU CUP in a rival on-line community, the JOSE RIZAL CUP is a scrimmage-based tournament wherein the participating teams would be involved in a single-round knockout system tournament wherein the titlist would have the bragging rights on the Philippine Buzzerbeater Community.

"Actually, this is not in anyway meant to rival the regular national cups being conducted by Buzzerbeater. This is in a way, a tournament that aims to keep the Philippine Buzzerbeater teams competitive even after the regular season ends." commented PILIPINAS NATIONALS coach PurongPinoy. "It is some sort of a play-for-fun tournament wherein the teams are expected to have fun while playing competitive basketball. Something close to the heart of us Filipinos."

The cup which is named after the Philippines' National Hero, has already gathered confirmations from at least 8 teams to start its inaugural tourney. Although the tournament format is initially set to be just a single-round fomat, it could still change depending on the consensus of the pioneering teams.

The current coach of the Philippine National Team, coach Jubas Maximus, has confirmed his team's participation in the tournament which makes the field competitive enough.

The list of those who have already confirmed for the tournament are as follows:

1. PILIPINAS NATIONALS
2. PBA ALL-STARS
3. TGIF MANILA
4.QUEENS COAST
5. JUBAS BEASTS
6. ATENEO JOLOGS
7. RED ROBINS
8. team Polydozel

Everyone's expecting a good and healthy competition on this tournament. The draw for the participating teams would be done by the end of tomorrow and the match schedules would be released on Friday.

Let us roll the red carpet for THE JOSE RIZAL CUP!

JOSE RIZAL CUP TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

ATENEO JOLOGS; HEAVY FAVORITE

Ended the regular season as Philippine Division 1.1 Big 8's second seeded team, trounced a heavy favorite in the First Round of the Playoffs on the way to the conference semifinals, having a season average of 97 points and 52 rebounds, what more can you say but this team is a heavy favorite to take the crown.

Spearheaded by 7-foot behemoth Filipino slotman Ubaldo Nudalo, the ATENEO JOLOGS is expected to dominate the shaded lane no matter which team they face in the tournament.

"The Ateneo Jologs team is packed with offensive firepower that any team would find so hard to contend with. A simple lapse in the defense would make their opponents kiss the game goodbye. Not only that, the team's inside strenght is formidable as evidenced by their rebounding averages. The only chink in the armour, if I may say, is the team's lack of teamwork as shown by their low assists statistics during the playoffs. But once they learn to play as one cohesive unit, they can be deadly." said long-time basketball analyst Butch Maniego when asked to comment on the Ateneo Jologs' CUP chances.

Please welcome THE ATENEO JOLOGS TEAM!

JOSE RIZAL CUP TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

UNLEASHING THE JUBAS BEASTS

They have arguably the best Philippine Buzzerbeater coach with them, That is enough to say that THE JUBAS BEASTS is going to rattle the RIZAL CUP arena.

Having a potent 1-2 combination of spitfire Marlon Kintanar and Taiwanese sniper Liang Wai Cheng, The BEASTS are expected to shoot the lights out on any arena they'll be stepping in.

Currently qualified in the conference semifinals of Philippine Division 1.1 Great 8, The BEASTS brings with them a 5-game winning streak into the RIZAL CUP.

"We are talking here about a team that has 6 players averaging in double figures in scoring and at least 15 steals an outing. Hey, if you think there's one there that could match up with them on both offense and defense, then bring it on." a bemused Bill Velasco said when asked to comment on who he thinks would be the best in the inaugural cup. "Let's face it, this team is almost running a patented offense focussed on their shooters which is a european brand of play. The short and long of the story, they are unmatched in terms of game mastery and outside shooting. The only problem, they're rebounding. Not one averages 2-digits in the rebounding category. But who needs rebounds if your shotting the ball that good." ended the smiling analyst.

Firepower plus stiffling defense. The right formula to win a crown.

We unleash the JUBAS BEAST!

Red Robins is also very experienced team for winning the season 3 Philippine Cup. i would like to take this opportunity to give my sincerest condolence for the death of Mike Hontoria, player of team polydozel who died in car accident.and lastly, Ladies and gentlemen let this cup be a fellowship. win or lose, im sure the winning team is bribed the referee.. JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

PBA ALL-STAR; NOT SO STAR-STUDDED

They are considered as the stinger in the tournament. The PBA ALL-STAR, who is currently undergoing a major team revamp after finishing the regular season with only 5 wins in the Philippines Division 2.2 conference, is considered as a longshot to go pass the first round.

"Come'on. Tell me, do you honestly think this team could beat JUBAS BEASTS or The ATENEO JOLOGS? Or even the PILIPINAS NATIONALS? You must be on a different league if you do." asked veteran PBA analyst Quinito Henson. " The team lacks focus, they don't have a real leader on the court, and everything seems not falling into the right places. The only glimmer of hope is with the fact that they are trying to improve steadily under the new management. We are talking here about a team that has lost their last 7 games excluding the 2 scrimmages which they also dropped. Unless they get some pretty good reinforcements, I predict a first round exit for this team."

Henson hit the nail right on its head on his review. But still, no one could say whether the PBA ALL-STARS could land that big reinforcement before the opening tip of the RIZAL CUP.

Please welcome THE PBA ALL-STARS!

JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

PILIPINAS NATIONALS; THE RISING TIGER

Barely three weeks yet very competitive. This is how you could describe the up and coming PILIPINAS NATIONALS team who was recently booted out of the Philippines Division 3.1 Big 8 Conference semifinals.

"It was indeed a big loss but it showed the potential of this up and coming team. With a deliberate attack on offense and an effective zone, this team could go far. They just need a good wingman." asessed columnist Recah Trinidad. "You could feel the heart of their team in their games. With Gillegao and Helesic running the patented mutt and jeff play, I believe they could survive the first round. But beyond that, they'll find it difficult specially if they would get the monsters like JUBAS BEASTS and ATENEO JOLOGS."

It would be youth vs. experience. How far can the NATIONALS go?

"We have a competitive team. Our main objective is just to reach the quarters of the cup. If we gain a quarterfinal ticket, then we already achieved our objectives." said coach PurongPinoy on his team's chances."We'll just make sure that we give it all our best. That's the most important thing for us. Win or lose as long as we give it our best shot, we consider ourselves winners already."

WELCOME THE PILIPINAS NATIONALS!

Manila - For the first time since winning the Philippine Cup Jubas Beasts' Coach Alas appeared in the press conference for the upcoming Jose Rizal Cup. He read this prepared statement:

"I would like to thank Coach Purongpinoy for inviting us to the 1st Jose Rizal Cup. I must say that this is a great way for Filipino managers from different leagues to get to know each other. The friendly competition will inspire camaraderie between participating managers. I hope that this will be continued on every season and that more Filipino managers will join. I would also like to say thank you again to Coach Purongpinoy for the his entertaining preview report on my team. But I would like to announce that I'm planning to give more playing time to my reserves for this tournament. Although my star players would probably come out to play from the bench from time to time. The reason for this is that we are currently in the League 1.1 playoffs and I would like my starters to be fresh for the upcoming league games. Sorry but I'm not entertaining questions today."

With that Coach Alas lit his cigar and left the press conference with the reporters grumbling.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...tapos wala na...

JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET FOR THE RED ROBINS

Philippine Cup Season 3 crown and Philippine Division 1.1 Season 3 league runner-up. This are the most glaring credentials of Season 3 powerhouse RED ROBINS as they confirmed their participation in the 1st ever JOSE RIZAL CUP.

"Defense is what makes the RED ROBINS so dangerous. The stats doesn't show but they've got hussle and that is what makes them so unpredictable and so dangerous specially during crunch time." shared former PBA Technical Head Perry Martinez on his assessment of the JOSE RIZAL CUP teams."Medyo minalas nga lang against JUBAS BEASTS but come'on, the BEASTS are the BEASTS. Kung iba ang nakaharap nila sa quarterfinals, malamang andyan pa rin iyan. They don't have a single superstar yet they are so strong and full of angst. That's old school basketball for you."

The organizers are highly anticipating the way the RED ROBINS would be coming into the tournament. With the 16 point trashing they got from Season 4 Philippine Cup titlist JUBAS BEASTS, they are probably looking for some payback.

RED ROBINS would be painting the town RED.

JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

TGIF MANILA; REBOUND, REBOUND, REBOUND

If there's any team entered in the JOSE RIZAL CUP now that could control the boards the entire day, that would be the TGIF MANILA. Currently entered in the Philippine Division 2.3 semifinals, this club from the country's capital doesn't bring in anything on the game except for the hunger to get those rebounds.

"This team thrives on the principle of rebounding. They epitomizes the Dennis Rodman brand of play except that the whole team is doing it. Parang isang buong team na puro Dennis Rodman o kaya Abe King ang kalaban mo everytime you play this team." a laughing former PBA Commisioner Noli Eala said about TGIF MANILA. "Check your stats. They are averaging close to 60 rebounds a game, Parang di Philippine team. They have 3 guys averaging more than 10 rebounds a game which gives more possession to them and is translated to more offensive opportunities as well. The key to beating them, take away their rebounding. But i doubt if any team could do that to them in this coming JOSE RIZAL CUP."

The one who controls the rebound controls the game. Thus, TGIF MANILA is looking to be in control of the CUP.

Welcome TGIF MANILA!

JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

team Polydozel; HUSTLING ITS WAY TO THE CUP

If there's any word that we could use to describe this Philippine Division 2.3 Great 8 conference #1 seed, it would be hustle.

Averaging close to 10 steals per game, this team could put the offense of any team in disarray with its unrelenting hustle.

"Nakakapagod panoorin." a short but meaningful description of retired PBA ace Hector Calma on the way team Polydozel plays. "Mabibilis saka parang mga kitikiti sa depensa. They are not so imposing on the paint but their perimeter defense is really unbelievable. Sila yung tipo ng team na pagkatapos mong panoorin eh mauuhaw ka sa pagod. But don't get me wrong, they are fun and exciting to watch. They keep you on the edge of your seats."

Indeed, team Polydozel's dazzling control of the game using hustle is something that any team would find hard to counter specially if you are used to the patented motion offense.

With team Polydozel, we expect an exciting JOSE RIZAL CUP.

Please welcome team Polydozel!

JOSE RIZAL CUP PREVIEW

QUEEN'S COAST; WHO WILL SAVE THE QUEEN?

This is Philippine Division 1.1's most underachieving team. They have the tools and the material to be a top contender but they can't seem to mix it all together.

"They are pretty strong on paper." started Manila Bulletin Sports columnist Ed Picson. "But sadly, that's only where they make their impact. On the paper and not on the floor. They have good players, a good coaching staff and a very supportive management. But they can't seem to find the right things to make everyone move in a single direction. Parang kulang sa team chemistry. If they'll be able to have that chemistry in them, this team would be one hell of a squad. But when? Nobody knows."

The QUEENS COAST is just averaging 52 caroms a game which is quite low for a Division 1.1 team. They are also forcing their counterparts to just 7 turn overs per outing which shows the teams lack of character in defense. But who knows. The JOSE RIZAL CUP might be a fitting way to learn new things.

Welcome the QUEENS COAST!
