Welcome to Season 30. The draw has been made for the consolation tournament and we're almost ready to go.

I already know who the core of the squad will be but I'm tracking a total of 42 players so competition for some places in the squad will be tight.

There are a number of decent teams in this year's tournament so a repeat of Season 28's semi final run may be difficult, but with a good draw anything is possible.

Speaking of the draw, there are already some big matchups in the first two weeks. Week one sees Italy having to travel to the Czech Republic and in week two Italy face Poland at home. Tough for Italy but since points difference is a factor in the consolation, good for everyone else.

We open the season tomorrow in Albania. A repeat of the season 27 fixture.

The squad isn't quite finalised yet but ten players have been named so far. As always the first squad is the hardest to choose. A couple of close calls. Barry Bains was close to edging in ahead of Rudy Esposto but I went with the better player rather than the player in better shape. Bains's owner might be upset but that's just tough. Most other omissions come down to game shape. It appears to have been a fairly poor week game shape wise for most of the EBBL so I've very little comment about individual players who are missing, except to say there as always I'll be adding players to the squad when necessary.

Have to say I'm more than a little disappointed right now. I'm looking at the box score and I just don't believe what I've just watched. To say the ratings don't reflect the game is understating it a bit.

One better outside scoring, three better inside scoring, similar OD, though again slightly in our favour, two better ID, one level more rebounding, and slightly more than one flow.

And on top of that, just to compound the whole insanity of the whole game, Albania were able to play their players for the entire 48 minutes, and have them playing better in the last minute than they had in the first. They were even able to make two steals off our better players in that last minute. I wish we'd had what they'd been drinking.

Edit: Almost forgot, their PF was able to score 34 against Innes, which I'd never expect, and Jashari the SF outplayed Marshall, which I can scarcely credit.

There's very little more that I can add.

Left scratching my head on this one, clutching at straws to find any reason why that game went the way it did. Yes they had HCA, yes they used more enthusiasm... But even that doesn't explain why vastly inferior players took apart our team.

You can't explain that.. pretty ridiculous, 5 players all game with lower ratings, no predictions and same offence/defence?

one in a million to get that result

the only thing i can think is that they had a second quarter run trigged by our starters having stamina of 5 or less, apart from Sharpling who has 9, combined with the CT(?) vs TIE.
Even if that is true, we still should've come back stronger in the third, one of their guys was 23 FF@$##รท=%S!!!

well I know for a fact that at least 2 of our starters don't have 5 or less stamina ;)

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't have any evidence except my own impressions. Scoring ratings on our big men were not as good as you'd expect from the difference in team ratings: PF had 1.096 per attempt and C had 1.123. Our opponent scoring ratings were actually better than our team's and better than their overall team ratings would otherise suggest (PF 1.092, C 1.247, also note that their C was on average GS and had the lowest individual rating of the entire team, even lower than the 40k 23yo PG).

I've now seen a lot of games that do not make sense based on team ratings, but actually make more sense when factoring in the individual scoring ratings at the key offensive positions. I suppose it depends on matchups and skills which are undervalued in the team ratings such as DR/JR for the offensive player or SB for the player guarding him.

The other thing which is often present in games like this is huge differences in FT. Clearly our opponents did a great job getting to the line and converting. They got a ton of FTs, but again that should be due to the difference in effort and matchups.

The 2 things might be connected: it's possible that scoring ratings do factor in FT likelihood while team ratings do not.
