Yes, despite me joking about how the game engine is bleeding to death in recent months, the truth is that, in the large majority of cases, I really enjoy how the game calculates the scoreline and winner of any given game. The key factors for me are how skills actually have an impact, and how the RNG gets balanced out thanks to the sport this game is based on.
I've played football/soccer manager games in the past where results felt too RNG based, an egregious example being Trophy Manager. I went from 4th out of 18 in my league one season to 14th the next, with what was essentially the same squad. In the latter season, I counted 8 games where I felt the RNG had stolen points from me and only 2 where it had gone the other way. Then there were examples of top-flight teams losing to low level teams in the cup, which whilst infrequent, happened enough to make me question what the point of building a better squad in that game was.
Contrast with BuzzerBeater. Whilst it's still mostly decided on RNG rolls, the good thing about basketball is that over a 48 minute game, your average team will record over 80 field goal attempts and 20 free throws. With this many RNG rolls to go through, often times bad stretches of luck will be corrected by good runs earlier or later. This also explains why in real-life, whilst sometimes bad shots go in and vice versa, a full NBA season usually sees the best team win the championship.
Then we add in the fact that better players on paper will almost certainly play better on hardwood too. This ABBL season, even with every team winning at least 3 games, there was a 17.4 FG% spread on offence, and 14.9 FG% spread on defence, between the best team and the worst in each area. And statistics aside, I find that the better team wins 9 out of 10, unless factors like effort levels, enthusiasm, GDP and/or HCA play against them. If you lose, there's usually a good reason for why you lost.
And that's what makes this game possibly the best game engine and sport combination for me in this genre. You can feel like you're actually being rewarded for building the best team out there. There's room for upset results, but times where I feel like I've been completely 'SIMMED' are rare. And because of this, I see myself playing this game for a while yet as long as it doesn't shut down, whereas other games made me eventually lose interest...
