So what is it like at YOUR arena? What's the layout? What are the concessions like? How good/bad are the fans? In essence, what is the EXPERIENCE at your enclave?
"Generals Mayhem"
location: Greensboro Coliseum
Capacity:10,715
Greensboro Coliseum is naturally located in Greensboro NC and has been home to the Generals since season 15. Black curtains are all drawn over the majority of the mezzanine leaving a capacity of 10,715. On the coliseum grounds there is also a smaller exhibition hall along with War Memorial Auditorium. Also on site is the ACC basketball museum.
Food & Beverage: 4 stars. An eclectic and varied selection of food stuff is available. Hot dogs are $4, $5 with chili. Pizza is from local legend Bills Pizza and is $8 for a individual pie. Pepsi products are offered in bottles at $4 and in fountain souvenir cups for $6 & $8 (includes one free refill). Also there are independent stands offering items such as Tacos $4, keilbasa (w/peppers & onions) $7. On occasion such delicacies such as ribs ($15 for a half rack, $20 on a full (includes slaw and fries) and Philly steak and cheese ($10) are offered.
Atmosphere: 4 stars. A historic venue home to some great moments in basketball history (IE 1974 Final four) it is best known for hosting the ACC tournament more than any other arena. Due to seating constraints the cavernous nature of the arena is not in full play but the venue offers excellent sight lines. Actually the experience of a Generals game is a little dependent on what level of experience you purchase. The bleacher sections are carnival seating and your quality of seat is entirely dependant on your commitment level. Three sides at this point are earmarked as carnival seating so if you are gung ho enough you can be right up front. To avoid stampedes fans are allowed into the arena in groups of 500, and if your being obnoxious or aggressive going in security has free reign to taser you and do not hesitate to do so, every home game there are a few tweaked out Hicks who get drug out of line drooling and convulsing.
But that does not mean the club and court side fans are being short changed. First off these sections have their own unique enterance, no need to mingle with the riff Raff. Court side seats though pricey for come with a pregame buffet built in to the price courtesy of Golden Corral (the Generals official training table). Luxury suites are catered events with the vendor of your choosing though we recommend Catering by Ellyn.
During nice weather on weekend home dates a robust tailgate scene is on display in the parking lots.
Solid pre game pomp and circumstance is a big plus and the use of "Funky Fanfare" by Keith Mansfield as the theme for the introduction of the starting lineups always gets the fans frothing.
Also a unique feature is the "little Generals" marching band which is really more of a pep band but they are fun to watch, though the selections tend to skewer a little too much towards cheese ball territory. But if you can handle material such as Shipoopi, Zorba the Greek, and the 3rd man theme you will be well entertained.
Fans: 2 stars. Wavering between overtly bigoted trailer park trash and indifferent snobs the separation between the types of fans in attendance could not be more striking. Bleacher bums are loud, obnoxious, crude and profane, sitting in the carnival sections is a ticket to the freak show. Don't plan on sitting.
The club level seating is rather bourgeois, lots of 42 year old soccer moms with their henpecked mates telling you to sit down because little Tiffany can't see McClain clank another poorly advised three point shot.
Court side is more engaged but extremely cliquish. Luxury suites are the domain of corporate sponsors and the environment is self evident.
