I know small forwards can be trained at either but my question is:

A small forward playing small forward is using which defense or primarily which defense?

It should be pretty much even but i'd say that Outside Defense is more important.

it depends on what offenses are more common in the leagues you play in. but for the most part you should see outside focus teams (usually run and gun). those offenses would prompt you to run something like a 3-2 zone which puts the small forward outside on defense.

He uses both, depending on the other teams strategy mainly.

I think the best way to have two SF's would be to have one who is a better inside defender against inside teams and an outside one against outside teams. It just seems a bit hard to have a SF who would be great both ways, unless you base his training around him.
