Or to be more specific...

When I look at the standings page for my league (USA, VI division), out of the 8 teams I see:

1. Top 4 teams against an orange-shaded background
2. A solid line between teams 5 & 6.
3. Another solid line between teams 7 & 8.

I figure some of this is related to promotion & demotion, yes? And what else...participation in the Cup? In the playoffs?

Thanks for helping clarify this, it's driving me insane.

the top 4 teams with the shaded background designate that they will be in the playoffs at that point in time. obviously this can change throughout the season but if the season were to end that day that would be the teams making it to the playoffs.

the fifth place team does not make the playoffs but is not up for relegation either. in your case this is where you fall. you don't have to worry about the possibility of relegation but you also won't have a chance at promotion by making the playoffs.

6 and 7 place teams have a one game match up against the 6 and 7 teams of the other conference at the end of the season to determine which 2 teams get relegated to a lower division. that's why they have solid lines separating them from the rest of the teams. since you're division IV that won't be a problem since that's the lowest level for active users at the moment.

the 8 place team does not get a shot at staying up and playing for a relegation match. they simply get relegated immediately.

hopefully that was clear enough for you. just post again if you need better clarification. i suppose users familiar with looking at soccer league standings would see the meanings easier. that's pretty much the format that is used in this pyramid system.

Yeah, that makes perfectly good sense. I figured it was something along those lines I just didn't know which line(s) signified which things. Thanks!

Yup, unless there is bot-clean-up in the leagues above. Then the teams with the best records will be promoted as well.
