I agree that it's more likely to get an MVP from a superstar on a mediocre team, than from a successful, well-balanced team... for a whole lot of reasons (longer cup runs, greater likelihood of sane minute management, less gross minutes from winning blowouts, defense doesn't generate gaudy stat lines).
But it's not impossible. My Simons
(786647) finally won one this year despite averaging only 29 mpg and being fairly distant from the leaders:
