Hi,

I wondered how the matchup ratings are calculated.
On my last match (1166018), my shooting guard was terrible, and scored 2 of 18 from the field, which reflects that if he'd shot 100 shots he'll end with about 11 of 100. How can he get 77.3 points that way?
I probably don't understand what this value means.

Good question. Did you have other guys play SG as well, or did that one guy play at 48 minutes. If the ratings are calculated as you suggest, and your backup shot 8 for 10, then if he took 100 shots, he'd score 80. If they mix the two together, you can see how you might get 77, but I'm not sure that's how it works.

My understanding is that the matchup rating is based purely on ratings, not what happened in the game. The player ratings are based on what happened in the game, at least in part.

So if you have an edge in a matchup rating, you should win that matchup. If you didn't, look at the player ratings. Your player should have earned a lesser mark than he usually does. Not that he earned a lesser mark than other team's player. The rules are a little coy/unclear on that, but that seems to explain what happens to my team.

So you need to look at the matchup rating to understand what should have happened with equal die rolls. Then look at the player ratings and compare them to what your players have been putting up in recent games. If they did worse, that explains some of the game.

We are explicitly warned not to compare player ratings, and that seems to be true. Such comparisons have never explained game outcomes for my team. However, the comparison of game to game performance of my own team does explain a lot.

Unfortunately, newbies don't have any data to compare to, and so are at a loss to get meaningful feedback until they've played ten games or so.

On that specific game my starter played 39 minutes. his backup only got the last two minutes of every period and all he did is miss one shot...

Thanks my friend,
Your theory does explain what happened. My shooting guard had a terrible game (actually he usually plays terrible, which i don't know why. I've opened another thread (8467.1) about it but haven't got a decent answer yet), although his ratings are pretty good (relative to my country, which is only at the second season), he has Strong jump shot, respectable Jump range and average driving, but almost always suck!

I believe (I'm not sure though) it works this way.
Those matchup ratings are only an average number. So if the SG has an matchup rating of 80, he will score an average of 80 when taking 100 shots.

why do matchup ratings still differ from game to game even though its an average number? The matchup ratings show an average amount of scored points in a particular game. The rating considers offensiv flow, oppenents deffense, home court advantage etc.

lets make an exampel:
SG A convertes in this particular game 50% of his shoots => scores 100 points out of 100 shots (no three pointers to make calculation easier)
SG B convertes only 33% of his shoots => scores 66 points out of 100 shots

However there is a random factor in this game. If both of them take 4 shots per game, most often player A will score more points, thoug there is a (relatively high) chance that player B scores more points than A.
If both of them take 10 shoots, the chance of A scoring more is even higher, but in some games B will still score more.
So the more shoots they take, the more often these teams will play this way against each other, both players will tend to their own shooting percentage.

edit: now i have taken a look at your player and his stats. Sorry i dont have got a good explanation. his shooting percentage is very bad all season, his shooting skills are quit good, his driving skill is okay and his experience is okay. the only thing a can think of now, is your offensive flow. it could be better. however even considering the bad flow, the percentage is a lot worse than expected.

So what your'e saying is the same as what Your Imaginary Friend said? am I right? according to the game's condition he should have scored about 77 points but actually played much worse?

thats right. sorry i thougt its the only a game he played like this. then it would have been a good explanation.
i have no idea why he is playing like this all season. sorry
Maybe your offensive flow, but still its a lot worse then I would expect from him.

Yea, it beats me.
The other SG has quite the same ratings and plays much better.

sorry dont understand what your point is.

The SF is having bad game this season, he is having average games and last game he have had a very good game. thats pretty usual. Over the season he is producing average stats. thats exactly what i have tried to say.

Furthermore something went wrong with the lineup of the oppenent team. the starting Five SF did not start. Dont know what the other coach did wrong. maybe he will explain to us ;-)))
So i dont know how the matchups ratings were calculated. Were they calculated by the ratings of the normal SF or did the skills of the SG who played SF mostly count???
