I think that the standings tiebreaker mechanism should be redone to more accurately reflect real-life basketball leagues instead of a somewhat frivolous statistic (point differential).

The NBA system can get very complicated, especially when 3+ teams are tied, but a simplified version (that uses point differential as a later tiebreaker rather than first tiebreaker) would be great. Things to consider might be head-to-head record, conference record, etc.

In most of the European leagues, the point differential is first thing to count, so that's a real-life basketball... And it's also easier to program, I think...

Works for me - I tried to find FIBA tiebreakers online and found a different set of tiebreakers. Although I know I've heard you guys say this game is based on the NBA, not FIBA...

Conference record would be easy to program as well, and makes sense from the perspective of primarily competing within conference.

I can see why they might want to avoid head-to-head since you would have to an initial sort by record, then detect ties, look at the head-to-head, and in the case of BB this might not break many ties since teams play two games against conference rivals, so you would be back to using all conference games anyhow.

Using the conference record to break ties would emphasize the division of leagues into two conferences. That separation is already done for scheduling, the all star game, and playoffs. Since what we are talking about is a ranking withinconferences, it is reasonable to include conference games as a tie-breaker.

The conference record is easy to visualize - see any newspaper that covers the NBA. Point differential is rather hard to to visualize, especially when dealing with 4 digit numbers. Point differential is of course useful as an ultimate tiebreaker due to the unlikelihood of teams ending up with the same point differential.

I am not advocating use of head-to-head, simply because it is more difficult to program, and because only two games are played against conference opponents, it may often not resolve ties.

Do those those Other Popular Manager Games use conferences?

Do we have blowout/mercy rules in BB? If so, then it seems pretty strange to make point differential that important. I would very much favor a head-to-head or division record or something like that as the first tie breaker.

I don't disagree with you all (I don't think point differential is the best way to do it), but I think there are probably a lot of other features I'd like to see implemented (in a new game like this) before changes/improvements in the tie breaker formula.
