Hi all,

I have been reading through the forums but haven't been able to find a thread that discusses in detail the effect inside shot has for guards.

I'm trying to develop my shooting guards to be able to drive to the basket and be effective when using the "look inside" offensive tactic. Only problem is, my shooting guard has an atrocious "inside shot" talent. I searched through the training speed analysis thread, and couldn't find any type of training that can train inside shot for guards.

so really to sum up I have two questions:

1. Is inside shot an important attribute for guards when they drive to the hoop, or is it primarily a centre / forwards ability?
2. What is the most effective way to train inside shot for guards? The only way I can think of is to play my guard at SF, and train inside shot focusing on C/PF/SF, but that would be the slowest type of inside shot training, considering it needs to train 3 positions (also the fact that I am not interested in training up my centres and forwards since they are mostly quite old).

thank you for any advice!

I do not know about 1.

But for 2: U can play your guard in scrimmages in the Center position and through that way train inside shot for 1 position. However, this will also go slow because of the small size of your guard...but if you really want to do it .. :)

Your guards can fire from anywhere. I played my SG as PG to train him in handling. Next thing I know, he shoots for 40 inside and I watch him make slam dunks. I didn't know the SG could get that close to the rim.

This might be of interest to you: (33639.14) (I've been having this discussion multiple times this week. Thanks to GM-jbmcrock for the link to what a BB said on the subject.)

Basically, on a driving play, both driving and inside shot are used to determine if the player scores. However, driving is weighted more heavily.

1. In my opinion, it is not all that important. It's a centre/forward ability. If you want your guards to drive to the basket, train driving (one on one).

2. If you really want to train him in inside shot, play him at the center position when you have a scrimmage, or in a regular game against a weak opponent.

I agree but as with anything in this game, being atrocious in the skill will still limit his ability to make driving shots. A bit of inside shot, inside d and rebounding are all nice secondary skills to have in a guard.

Thanks for your responses guys, it was very helpful.
I also got a very helpful email from The Mogul which I'll paste below in case other people might be interested, I found it helped a lot with my questions.

--------------------------------

I've had a shooting guard with atrocious inside shot for many seasons, and he is able to "drive to the hoop for a layup" and convert. His ability to do this seems very similar to players I've used at SG with respectable inside shot.

One difference I've noticed is guys with respectable inside shot, while playing SG, will occassionally attempt all the other types of inside shots. Hook shots, alley-oop plays, everything in the book. However, they seem to do this extremely rarely (even while playing look inside).

It would take a very long time to train inside shot on your SG all the way from atrocious to even mediocre or average. I think that the benefit isn't worth the effort, and that your SG can still be very effective while running look inside.

I would have posted this on the forums, but I believe that you asked your question in the wrong forum (it should go in help), and I don't want my post to be lost if the thread is moved.

I hope that helps,

~TM

also non driving and just shooting guards could do that ;)

My sg with inside abilities, ever scored less then my outisde orieentated guard, with is 1 and lower driving and it don't make much different if i play li or run and gun(ok in run and gun both score more).
