While I "know" there's no such thing as FT defense, I had a similar observation. In buzzermanager the FT% of the Opponents is calculated. And I was surprised at the range and spread I still found after 9 games in my league.

With a range from 58.1% to 73% and a Mean of 65.27 (SD=4.06). I find the SD to be quite high for a something that should be about equal across teams.

I checked for a difference based on Big 8 versus Great 8 based teams and noticed it was 66.8% versus 63.7%. But this difference was not significant (p=.13). (maybe it was significant before the crossover games)

So uhhhhh....yeah just surprised by the spread, but maybe it will even out more when the cross-over games are done and all teams will have played eachother once.

I don't see why FT would necessarily be equal across teams. Players have a wide range of different FT skill and some managers train FT and some don't so there could be a lot of difference.

It's FT % against they're looking at, not team FT%. So assuming everybody has played the same opponents theoretically the FT% against should be statistically similar. (After 7, 14, and 21 games this should be the case).

However, that doesn't account for managers using different lineups against different teams, teams changing players(through any means), or different tactics causing a different spread of FT against different opponents. Or simply different players get free throws against different teams.

Yes that's what I meant. Opponents FT% against the different teams.

Ofcourse there's also a small difference between those, because you don't play against your own team. So if my FT% is great, then my average opponent FT% might be a little below average because I didn't have to play against my own team...and the rest did.

You mentioned some as well, although I'm not sure how much tactics would affect FT%. And yeah it might be that my team si prone to fouling SF's, and that the average FT-skill of SF's in my league is higher than PG's f.e. (lots of possibilities when you look into it)
