Thanks for the clarification. It is not that it is illegal, I just thought it was a bit bizarre.
In the particular case I am talking about (46:06), I was up 11 and the opposition was shooting free throws. When I got subs before free-throws, a PF with awful rebounding and was sent in, so it definitely wasn't the 'rebounding' unit.
Following your suggestions, the only reasonable explanation is that the coach was doing offense-defense subs, and fielded the high defense guys. However, I don't see how these are necessary when the team is shooting FTs. I guess one can assume this was a conservative approach in case the second FT is missed and the other team gets an offensive rebound, which isn't deprived of logic.
Oh, and while we're at the new changes: is there any reason why the middle column of team ratings in the new box score is so narrow it has to go on two lines? There is so much space to use horizontally, and this makes the page unnecessarily long.
This is a minor issue, but should be fairly straightforward to fix.
