I also dont exactly get how upgrading a bench player is going to get your starters more minutes...

i think already the starters play a lot of minutes here, even with solid backups but with solid backup the coach don't wait that much till the starters run out of gas to switch the players. So that it is a bit smoother with the bench player and the starters(even when the complete lineup changes are mostly result of long time without the possiblility to change)

'I want my starters in a close game at the end'
Your own sentence. That's where the the upgrading the bench player is the solution. If your bench player is solid, then the substitution will not be in the end of the quarter. Thus resolving the "bench finishing the game issue".
You are more of a highlights NBA watcher? I own a league pass and I have watched 82 dallas last season games and a bunch of good matchups (heat vs lakers etc) + all playoff games and finals live. Mostly (there are exceptions though) the bench starts the 4-th quarter, thus letting the starters rest and finish the game. Surely I should not have to explain this to an american.

Miami Heat bench is TERRIBLE but how many times did their bench finish the game again?
Now that's a question of stamina here. If you have terrible bench players and great starters with high end stamina you will get 48 minutes from them. If you have a 100k starter and 1k sub, the sub will not play unless there is carbage time, injury or foul trouble.
Well to be exact, one of the TERRIBLE bench players in Miami assumed a starting role in the finals.

It's not a matter of stamina... in BB when yo have a high lead ur starters get substituted no matter what ur stamina is..

You are talking about blowout rule, which is a different matter all together.
