Is the "empty lineup" prevention related to:
1. Eliminating walkovers due to less than 3 available players
2. Preventing blank lineups / partial blank lineups where sufficient numbers of players are dressed, but the depth chart is left empty or partially empty
3. Both 1 and 2?

I certainly wouldn't want to test #1 if it's actually #2, for example.

So is it 1 or 2?

While I like preventing walk overs, I would hate to see what would happen to gameshapes if the best players were always picked, but I suppose that's the price for forgetting to set a lineup.

I think preventing walkovers is the key...

With changes in lineups and new teams, etc. This happens quite frequently. Its a good change.

I don't think it prevents team from running the dress 3 guys only strategy. However, it probably should IMO. Having 5 players should be required for any team.

I mean if a team only has 4 players on their team, then yes they should forfeit the game. This I will set three players in the lineup in order to lose the game stuff is kinda goofy and throws off training for the other team because of foul outs against lucky fans.

I've still more than one doubt if this new feature will give more power to those are using empty slots or if this change will make it useless (that is not bad at all cause this is a game at the end)

I'll definitely try to test this out in my next few PL games, but as a couple others have asked, what exactly is this trying to prevent? When I went to my next PL game and did a full blank lineup it didn't do anything. Does it just randomly assign players to positions? Or as you said "Just think of it as if the coach never got the match depth chart and decided to go with his own vision instead. "... isn't this what blanking does already? The coach decides and sticks who he thinks should get minutes at different positions and it works out pretty well. How is this different?

I agree with EBW, but I'll give it a try as well. PLs are more a sandbox-type setting for me atleast - competing with irl friends etc. for fun :). GMs et al might want to wait for more feedback - incremental and small changes are best for this good game!

This BETTER only be to prevent walkovers. If it eliminates the blank or partially blank lineup while having enough active players, then it'd be the worst decision ever.

Unless...they change how many minutes high stamina guys get, or put in an option for preferred minute usage per position. I mean, if we're stuck seeing our starters get 40 to 44 minutes a game, this would kill stamina training.

Set a blank lineup with one guy for my PL. Was not able to set a blank lineup with zero guys in the lineup.

I have a feeling you should report AFTER the game, how your specific "empty lineup" was set and how it worked/not worked.
Example:
"I set Player A as a starter, backup and reserv on PG, same for Player B on SG, then empty spots on SF,PF,C. Had picked 9 players. It worked wonders for me, both PG and SG played all 48minutes, my "pure" C played 40 minutes as C and my SF played 28 minutes as SF and 5 as PF, and the backup SF 10 minutes at SF while my two best PF shared the load on PF with 22,20 minutes. My scrubs had up to 5 minutes each at random positions."

I was able to submit a blank lineup successfully for my next PL game.
