But I assume that people with systematic training plans are able to say how many additional skill-ups they could achieve once they first noticed reduced training speed. In some German forum discussions folks said it was pretty rapid change of training speed, so therefore the cap would not be so soft.

-----

If the cap was related to salary, a typical shooting guard would hit hard against the cap if you were training js or range (-> strong salary effect). However, with such an implementation training of ps should still work out fine as most of them have skill levels that generate small salary increments. Did anyone try different training types in capped players?

I think the term "hard cap" means something different than you mean. A hard cap means that beyond the point of reaching the cap, no more training is possible at all. A soft cap allows that a player be trained further after reaching the cap, although rather slower than before. The soft cap can even kick in at some particular point and be quite harsh, but as long as training is still possible, it is nevertheless soft.

I give you an example:

Training a 185 cm SG (22 y) in single position training in OD, may give you a skill up every 2.3 weeks of training. If the soft cap kicks in and changes it to 3 weeks, it is likely that you will not notice this before 5 weeks of time. With such an effect however, you may decide that it is still worth to train player. However, if it chages to 4 weeks for the next skill up (still a soft cap), you will start to be quite discouraged. At the same time, you will notice earlier that there is an effect.

There should be somebody out there that could share with us his training diary.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I have not been as active here as before. I just do not have the time to wade too much into the discussion anymore. And the study is probably suffering because of it - there is very little new data flowing in these days - and I am still quite far from making any meaningful conclusions.

But - please keep sending your data. I will continue to collect it until they kick me out of the game. Unfortunately, until I have something concrete to say, I am just going to passively read the discussion and let others have the debate.

(eg inside shot is not changing the salary of a small forward until he switches to become a pf).

This is interesting for me too.

I am buying a 36k center with Star potential. In the Training manual I read star soft cap happens around 45-50k. This means I can get two more pops in IS before hitting soft cap.

But I'm more interested in what happens when you actually hit your soft cap and start training skills that don't add to salary for that position. For example, I'd train this C's Passing to Proficient, Handling and Driving a few pop-ups and Jump shot also. All of this doesn't change the salary one bit (used the Josef-K salary calculator). So will he train his secondary skills slower because of soft cap or not?

I may have an answer in my roster, but I want to hear other opinions too. I have this player:

Ferenc Boga (12159053) Shooting Guard

Weekly salary: $ 10 246

DMI: 46100
Age: 21
Height: 6'3" / 190 cm
Potential: 6th man
Game Shape: respectable
Jump Shot: proficient Jump Range: strong
Outside Def.: proficient Handling: average
Driving: inept Passing: respectable
Inside Shot: atrocious Inside Def.: average
Rebounding: respectable Shot Blocking: awful
Stamina: respectable Free Throw: mediocre

His last pop was in OD. Then I trained 1 on 1 for two weeks and JS for one week; only Handling and driving got one pop, while JS didn't. This probably means he reached his soft cap, but is still training with normal speed in skills which don't affect his salary with pops. At least I can guess that from how training went...thoughts?

Mostly though, it seems unlikely due to the complexity of the implementation that would be needed. Also since we have no evidence that the caps are based directly on salary.

I do not think it is unlikely. If it is not linked to salary you need to build a totally different assessment of player development. What are you going to choose? Number of skill points? If you want to have something related to the perfomance, it must be position related. This is exactly the way the salary formula has ben implemented. Therefore, it seems to me the most plausible hypothesis for the moment.

Salary, itself, is based on the number of skill points. It's just that the formula is different for every position.
