the thing is, we had that hype too ;) He was outstanding for an 14 year old, playing solid in the best european league. but he didn't improved that much which you could hope for, but i think he could have a good NBA career and he wouldn't be the first player who catch up athletically in the NBA.

Well those kind of players are extremely skilled like Dirk for example. Ricky other than PA/HA doesnt possess any other elite skill....

yes, there were many european busts. But there were many American busts, too. And then there's the success of some European players who were drafted very late. Do you really want to consider the Gasol brothers, Tony Parker or even Danilo Gallinari busts? And I'm not even talking about Manu Ginobili, who was taken with the 59th pick overall! (and who should be considered European for these purposes, as he played in Italy before being drafted)

I can't really explain Rubio other than hype and youth made it seem like he had unlimited potential -- but it sounds like he didn't develop much this year.

In general, I think there is a scarcity of bigger players (just because of the demographics) and thus the NBA is always looking for big men. In general, I think big men are drafted higher and more so on potential than a PG or wing. Thus there tends to be more big men "busts" -- not just American players, but from everywhere.

You know, most of the young bigs are a bust. Here is a list of american bigs who dont deserve their draft pick.

Jason Collier 15
Kwame Brown 1
Marcus Fizer 4
Stromile Swift 2
Melvin Ely 12
Marcus Haislip 13
Michael Sweetney 9
Robert Swift 12
Adam Morrison 3
Shelden Williams 5
Patrick Obryant 9
Hilton Armstrong 12
Robin Lopez 15
Hasheem Thabeet 2 The flop

And as you can see, I took players only from the top 15. So there is no difference between european and american bigs.

Huh? Robin Lopez is a Center.

And I think we can say the same about American players. Michael Beasley? 2nd pick, even probable 1st pick, bust. Oden? 1st pick, constantly injured. Morrison (even if he's no Big Man)? 4th pick, ultimate bust. Tyrus Thomas? Shelden Williams?

It's not like NBA teams draft all that well. This has nothing to do with players being European or not, and everything with general hype and stupid GMs trying to outsmart everyone.
