Engineers extend win streak to four games, trounce Alam Na 118-44

DLSU IE-98 continued with their winning streak last night, beating Alam Na with the score of 118-44. The Engineers were led by Lou Modina, who had 23 points and a career high 17 rebounds. Luduvico Estil also had a balanced game, ending up with 13 points, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal and 3 blocks in 27 minutes of action.

The game appeared to have been decided by the end of the first quarter, as the Engineers raced to an early 20 point lead. They have not looked back since. Ken Rosalia paced Alam Na with 11 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Axel Yusingco and Theo Alvarez with 10 points each.

Things weren't going for the home team, as DLSU IE-98 had their way on both ends of the court. The Engineers shot an impressive 59% in the field and manhandled Alam Na on the boards, 68-24.

"We're happy we won this game, and we would like to get as many wins as we can since it will be rough sailing till we get to the all-star break" team manager fpanzer10 said. He was referring to the next three teams DLSU IE-98 will be facing: The Hell Catz, After Shocks and Caloy Boys respectively. "We highly respect the talent those teams have, and we welcome the challenge and experience they will be giving us... We hope to steal at least one game against any of these teams."

The Engineers will be playing the 171st seeded Hell Catz this Saturday at 5:30pm.

Gary Lea presented to the media today

Australian forward Gary Lea was presented to the press by DLSU IE-98 earlier today. His arrival has sparked both alleged intrigue and controversy, since it was rumored that not everyone in the franchise was happy with the 6'8 big man.

"Let's see what he can do in the court... His playing time.has been limited at best, so my concern is how he adapts with a system that involves alot of running around and hustle" said coach Franco Zarate. "Let's see how my roation will be after team practice."

Lea, on the other hand, is looking forward to prove everyone wrong. "I know I have to prove myself with the team, (most of them) have been together since two season ago, so they are familiar with each others style of play. I hope to be able to adjust with coach Zarate's system."

Team skipper Lucilo Quilao feels Lea's arrival will help the team by taking in more minutes, but this has yet to be confirmed by coach Zarate. This does not bode well, however, for Yau Fusheng as his minutes are expected to be reduced. "I know that team would like to give it a go (make the playoffs) this season, so I would have to get used to the rotation adjustment. I'm not exactly happy with the outcome, but I will be ready whenever the coach calls for me" said Fusheng.

Fusheng being shipped out of DLSU IE-98

Just hours after the acquisition of forward Gary Lea, DLSU IE-98 has decided to part ways with Yau Fusheng.

"We thank Yau for his professionalism throughout this process and we wish him all the best." a spokesperson for the Engineers said Friday night after a closed door team meeting. "His shooting and defensive skills are an asset to teams who wish to pursue him, and we look forward to seeing his career flourish."

Fusheng had averages of 4.8 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 1.4 apg given 14.2 mpg in 10 games with the Engineers.

Hell Catz snap DLSU IE-98's winning streak, defeat the Engineers 98-86

DLSU IE-98's winning streak ended tonight against the favored Hell Catz.

Forward Jerome Elizalde had his way tonight with the interior defense of DLSU IE-98, scoring 37 points to lead the Catz against the Engineers, 98-86.

DLSU's leading scorer, Alvaro Iturren, was sidelined with two quick fouls in the first quarter and had to find his rhythm in the first half. He ended the game with 25 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. The rest of Engineers starters didn't fare well against the defense of the Catz - Lucilo Quilao had 16 points on 5-15 shooting and was assessed a flagrant foul, Luduvico Estil had 1-6 shooting with 3 points, and DJ Montano didn't convert any of his shots. Australian Gary Lea finished his first game with 4 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists and 1 steal in 10 minutes of action. Only Mark Kriegshauser did well, scoring 20 points on 9-20 shooting and gathered 14 rebounds.

"Ang sama talaga ng laro ko, talagang binantayan ako ng todo ni (Diogo) Dourado kanina. Bawi na lang next time" said Montano after the game. He immediately left the building afterwards.

There was simply no solution for the Engineers against the high flying Hell Catz as they dictated the pace of the game with inside baskets - layups, dunks and alley-oops. "We prepared hard for this game yet we still fell short. This tells you how good the Hell Catz really are. We hope to bounce back in the next game against the After Shocks." said coach Franco Zarate during the post game press conference.

The Engineers travel to the Arena Monday night to face the After Shocks on 13 May 2014.

Hell Catz - 98: Elizalde - 37, Dourado - 23, Stoguart - 18, Vistakas - 8, Guamen - 6, Renvoise - 4, Mpaxevanakis - 2, Stauber - 0, Villafrancia - 0

DLSU IE-98 - 86:
Iturren - 25, Kriegshauser - 20, Quilao - 16, Jesus - 10, Velez - 6, Lea - 4, Estil - 3, Modina - 2, Montano - 0, Cav - 0

Quarterscores: 27 - 22, 51 - 44, 72 - 59, 98 - 86

Well, that's the plan. Document the growth of the team from a rag tag group in Division IV to being a more respectable unit. Ultimately the goal is to get to Div II, then PPL :D

Engineers lose in overtime against Caloys Boys, 119-110

What started as an early game celebration for the Engineers ended in disaster.

DLSU IE-98 lost a ten point lead in the last 6 minutes of play, and were eventually outscored by Caloys Boys in the extra period, losing to Caloys Boys, 119-110.

22 year old sensation Riel Cleofas led the way for the Boys with 33 points and 21 rebounds as he plowed his way through the Engineers defense.

Coach Franco Zarate had himself to blame after the game.

"It was my fault, I made my boys prepare hard for this game but I didn't really foresee the match up problems this team faced. Also, we didn't really do well on offense and it's really hard if our star player makes on a third of his shots... We made a valiant stand in our home court, and for that I commend the team in doing so" said Zarate to courtside reporters after the loss.

The Engineers fall to 5-8 in the Big 8 conference, only two games ahead of the surging Vicious Vixens (3-10).

"We will rest for awhile (because of the All-Star break), and look forward to getting another win in our next couple of games" said Mark Kriegshauser.

DLSU IE-98 - 110: Iturren - 30, Kriegshauser - 20, Quilao - 15, Montano - 14, Estil - 10, Velez - 8, Lea - 7, Cav - 6, Modino - 0, Jesus - 0

Caloys Boys - 199:
Cleofas - 33, Gou - 23, Korzhenevskiy - 18, Maapni - 16, Nievas - 15, Gyurta - 7, Sardua - 4, Pediangco - 3, Pelasol - 0, Calizar - 0

Quarterscores: 25 - 21, 49 - 56, 73 - 83, 97 - 97, 119 - 110 (OT)

ALL-STAR BREAK SPECIAL

Iturren wins 3-point shootout, Kriegshauser and Estil nominated in the all-star ballot

Even if the Engineers are coping with the style of play in Div III, some players have started to show they have what it takes to play in the big stage.

It was an all-import finale, with Alvaro Iturren scoring 23 points against Antonio Piccinonno to win his first three point trophy after two attempts. "I'm so happy to win this competition, and this shows my dependability in taking the three" said Iturren. "I'm also helping with the shooting progress of DJ, Carey and Caesar in practice. It always helps to have a spot up three point shooter in the team, better if there were four of us who can do the same."

Elsewhere, Mark Kriegshauser and Luduvico Estil were nominated in this year's all star balloting. "Though we both fell short in making the team, we are both happy to be considered as part of the elite in our conference" said Kriegshauser. "We look forward to translating this success into wins in the future.

They will get their chance tomorrow, as the Engineers face the Lee Thal Angas at the Velasco Hall, 5:30PM.
