Hi Wagner,

one thought from my side from end of regular season.

What if 3 teams have same W-L record and every team lost and won one game(with other two teams).
I know it didnt happen but it might be.

Should we think about solution:
-virtual table with only teams with tie?
- +/- differential ?

game set (y)

Hello Paul George,
Please send another match challenge to Elan Demars as soon as possible, because match link you have provided in your teams' own box score post is played 1 hour too late. Time remains the same during Playoffs, as it is during that seasons' Regular Season.
So official HGL match time this season is 15.30 (a.k.a. 3.30PM) EET Daylight Savings Time, so match time needs to be 14.30 Polish time (which equals to 15.30 EET DST).

(All other matches for Second Round have been organized at correct time).

EDIT 12.9.2025 Correct link provided, all Second Round (September 14th) playoff matches are now organized properly.

Excellent question, Paul George! I think I've speculated on this situation earlier, but it might have been on Homegrown teams II-thread, and I won't try to search for that/those messages right now. But I'll try to respond something now..

First, even though it might seem like a minor correction, HGL uses points to rank teams, and while this is most of the time equivalent of wins, in the case of forfeits it will have an effect on league position (which was the case with KKS on this Season 2). But I of course got your point.. :)

So situation that you mentioned about could indeed become a challenge, if for example team
A wins B
B wins C, and
C wins A.
Then we would face situation where one should be above another, except that third team "messes up" that easy solution if one of the tied teams doesn't lose to both other tied teams... If I have made a mistake in my thinking (in an above example, that it would make it impossible to solve situation without adding another layer/method of comparison), anybody please let me know.

I can't remember exactly how I speculated on those chances to solve such situation (and if I haven't written about it anywhere in BB, I have thought about it). We have plenty of time to speculate/decide on it (S3 Playoffs).

First, I need to ask what do you mean by that "virtual table with only teams with tie"? An "isolated table within a league table", in which possibly different classification methods are applied (than in normal 'no tie' or '2-way tie' situations)?
I kind of do that already with each tie case separately, but of course it's far more simple to do that if it's only a 2-way tie.

Anyway, as far as I remember, I might have suggested using at least two different solutions to such situation.

As I'm very defense orientated myself (even though looking at my allowed points in HGL doesn't show that), I think my first and foremost solution would've been to award best position to a team with least allowed points (Yes, contrary to typical "score as much as possible"-mentality that media seems to appreciate nowadays, I appreciate excellent defense way more and would like to give great defense as much appreciation as possible - only downside from my point of view being, that this number for each team is not currently readily available, unless HGL special statistics are being updated, which they haven't for example on this season after Round 6, but it'd be possible to manually count numbers at the end of the season if somewhat unlikely 3-way tie situation would exist.).

The other, at least passable option to rate teams, would be to use scoring differential (+/-) value, which is always readily available on a league table, and while it's in a way "as fair as any" classification system, it does favor certain playing styles/strategies if you want to "optimize" your point differential.
This was one of the reasons, in addition to me really thinking that the team which has won RS meeting should be rated higher, why point differential isn't one of the (first, if at all) decisive factors on determining league positions in the case of ties - and this policy/classification method was also introduced to HGL in order to be able to add more fun aspect to it.

Like I mentioned, it's sometimes great to be able try to give even few minutes playing time to my older players, or try interesting tactics choices, while simultaneously trying to win (if I feel comfortable enough about my chances to win after such experiments), as in "regular BB league" I can't really almost ever do that as I have to fight for survival. (I guess many HG teams face same challenge).

France, who else ?

:o

Finland, anyone? ;)
But in all honesty, of course if our countries would meet during playoffs, yours would be a significant favorite.

However, what I like in this current tournament format, is that it's a 'one match decides it all'-playoff format, and for example Poland was able to shock everyone previously by ending 4th in the whole Championship competition (which, in addition to many other Polish people, must have been a great moment of joy for Rajdersi's Paul George!).

Back to off-topic for a short while:
It seems nobody jumped with me on this boat, but after such a historical match result yesterday which sealed my prediction, I don't mind. ;)

You're right. Finland beat Serbia with a great game.
I unfortunately missed the game between Georgia and France. OK, France had some big guys out of the tournament, but Georgia made a big upset too.

Yes, fantastic performance indeed... Match of a lifetime for a Finnish basketball fan, but same can be said about win over Georgia. :)

I agree, and while I didn't check betting odds before France vs. Georgia match, I personally considered Georgia a big underdog against France.

It tells something in my opinion, that Finland was then actually a 5 point favorite to win their semifinal (vs. Georgia), and I don't think they would've been favorites against France. France is always very tough team to beat (not impossible of course, but hard), even if they wouldn't have 100% optimal roster.

Not sure how we managed to come 3rd (in group).
Dead stop now for sure vs hungry opponent.

We have been awful inactive. First season we have missed fixing scrimmages for training.
That is so bad for a homegrown team.
Work related.

Newbie us have fixed play-off match :)

Very well done, Spela, for the success and for the fact that you have indeed organized first ever Playoff match for your team!

3rd in a Regular Season in your first ever season is excellent achievement, and I'd expect your Second Round match to be very interesting and even against Suuret Muinaiset. You beat them by 1 (!) point during Regular Season, but now you have a home court advantage, so let's see how much that (and other possible roster/tactical changes) affect to the result!

Nevertheless, it will be now decided in HB vs. SUM if it's Sweden or Finland who first in history reaches Medal Games in HGL!

I know how you feel about the missed training, as Paul George mentioned most of us (I think all of us) have been there. I think you'll reach your goals, if you can get back to the regular (3 matches per week) training schedule ASAP.

And if you can afford, you can always hire better coach for a while who will make up to some of your missed training ;)

Well, Estonia left the tournament without advancing from the group. Especially in the last game against Portugal, where everything was on the line, they did not manage to keep up the intensity. Extreme disappointment to a nation that considers basketball the main national sport.

But there were several interesting (or upsetting) games throughout the tournament, especially the finnish performance against Serbia. Though, now Finland faces probably the best team in Europe currently and after having lost the group game against Germany, it will definitely be interesting how both teams will go into the game, considering that the last 2 games Germany was really struggling for large portions of the game.

If I had to bet right now, I would say that my second home, Germany, would have the upper hand and could win the whole tournament.

I believe that Germany is the best team in Europe, BUT :
- Jokic + crazy shooters + good hands inside players
- Greece at home (at the beginning of the championships)

- France is remaking a team (and a coach, don't forget it !)
- Spain is ... out ???
- Slovenia would make 1/4 finals often, but not very much more

Now, I haven't seriously followed this eurobasket and I don't know very well all the non-participants, except for France (Wemby) because of NBA.
My favourite now is Germany, because of this awful clown named Schröeder (I don't like him, but what a player !) and the Wagner brothers.

Ah SUM is finnish team - darn they so good now in basketball :)
Yes I saw the 1p win. This time around for sure loss.
Finland on a roll!

Trainer is to keep old to not age.

I got boycot from last time in top div.

Been like that all times.
Sad way to do the game.
They should keep tabs on from where you come (under) and look at the entire season and lower the demands on a new team.
