so for whatever reason

That reason is that your team was up by 20. which means garbage time in this game. Perhaps your coach left the scrubs out there to teach them a lesson. Remember, you are in d.IV, which would be about high school (or so) in real life. And with 3 minutes left you were still up by 12. In that next minute the lead went down to 5. So the coach made a mistake by leaving the scrubs in an extra minute. It happens. What's more, it was your starters who gave up a 6 point lead in the last 52 seconds.

Better luck next time.

Once I scored a basket that still makes me laugh.

Experience could be a big factor here at the end as well. If your players have low experience and their players have high experience that can burn you at times.

I had a game a few months back where I was down by 13 with about 1:30 left and managed to pull it out because I had a SG that could shoot well and had great experience.

One bad experience should not be enough to discourage someone from playing even though it unfortunately happened early for you. I bet if you stick it out for a while you will come out on top of a situation like that.

Jordan got his first ring at 27, Nowitski had more failure than success in playof...

Hey, even Argentina was more than 40 years without playing basket n the Olympics, and look where we could get. We even were the first to beat the Dream Team, changing the shape of intenational basket forever.

Rome wasn't built in a day. For example, I've lost four finals ina row. And here I am.

The engine needs a break to get back your starters, when the lead is below the 'garbage time minimum'. So any foul, timeout etc. should lead to a substitution of your crappy players.
I haven't checked your match, but maybe that has been a problem...

It had plenty of breaks when my lead was still in the 19-10 point range. My crappy players fouled guys, threw the ball out of bounds, offensively charged, tripped and fell, made balloon animals, took naps, managed to get fouled (even made two free throws in a row at one point), etc...

It's okay - I've chalked it up to several things, many of which are longer term fixes, but the key factor is that I shouldn't have suited up my uber-scrubs. My normal scrubs, sure, they are fit to play 12-15 minutes in a backup role and I trust them with that, but my 10th, 11th, and 12th men are a disaster squad. I played one of them, the backup backup center, for 48 minutes in a scrimmage to get him some training and he almost had double digit turnovers.

From now on my uber-scrubs are going to sit behind the bench in fancy street clothes at game time.
Or heck, after the draft I may be able to let a couple go.
