65 minutes is fine. Gameshape is a bit random like that.

Match Report Australia V Kazakhstan 22/7/13 (4th game of U21 Asian Championship)

After 3 straight victories in the first pool stage of this seasons Asian Championships, the standings ladder had tightened up leading into our Aussie Under 21s game against Kazakhstan.

Wins and point margins had become extremely important with Australia, Indonesia and Iran all unbeaten and holding the top 3 positions and with these teams to play each other and also Kazakhstan, who were in 4th spot, during the next 3 weeks.

Australias task tonight at GM Koopasaurus’s “Stronghold” arena was to win big and try to extend their “one points difference margin” from 2nd on the ladder Indonesia who tonight were drawn to play 3rd placed Iran.

Kazakhstan who had had only one win from 3 games was clinging to the 4th and final qualification spot in the pool, and as their last 2 games after tonight were to be played against the higher ranked Iran and Indonesian teams there was concern in the offsite forum that they might target us with a crunch time in a desperate bid to sneak into the next stage of this tournament.

The Wombat King had during the weekend leading into tonights game, expressed his pride in his squad of 14 players who all had either strong or Proficient game shape, which on paper appeared to be a huge advantage against the 60th ranked Kazakhstan team who only had 8 of their 18 players in strong or proficient game shapes.

Finished their warm ups the Wombat King sprung the first surprise of the night by starting Sercombe (Combover) at PG, Bath Water (Barth) at SG and the Hessian Bag (Sacks) at SF.

The Duke won the tip off and it didn’t take long for the Combover to get a great pass off to the Hessian bag to enable the first points to be scored.

Kazakhstan were playing a possession style game and soon found Nil Zuev, their star shooting guard, in space who hit a 3 despite the best defensive efforts of the Hessian Bag.

Sacks (Hessian Bag) had widely been criticized last week for his poor shooting, certainly begun to make amends hitting his first 3 shots before missing a shot with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

Quarter time and despite restricting Zuev to 2 out of 12 for the quarter the Australians trailed the Kazakhstans 13 to 12 in a low scoring quarter

In the second and Zuev was everywhere, jumping between PG, SG and SF positions and quickly extended his teams lead with a couple of free throws after drawing a 3rd foul on the Hessian Bag.

3 minutes in and Ted brought the crowd to their feet when he hit a huge 3 pointer to put the Aussies back in front.

The Wombat King who at this stage was quite concerned about his teams low scoring was getting regular updates on the Iran v Indonesia game which was being played around the corner at the Crockers home court.

Six minutes in and the scores were tied on 27 points and it was noticeable that the Bath Water had gone stagnant with his shooting having missed all 6 of his attempts, 4 of which had been taken outside the arc

2 minutes left in the quarter and the crowd was again brought to its feet, this time by Possum Petes other contribution to the team, the Chico Roll showing that like Ted he could also hit a 3 pointer.

Inspired by the Chico, Bath Water, Polar Bear, Tic Tac all quickly hit shots in quick succession which saw Australia get the first real break on the Kazakhstans and go to half time with a 46 to 36 lead.

Ted and the Duke had begun to assert their dominance with 16 rebounds with 18 points between them, whilst for the Kazakhstans Zuev had managed to jack up 21 shots for the half to be leading scorer with 20 points and he was also at this stage his teams leading rebounder with 5.

Continued from previous post

3rd quarter started with the Hessian Bag blocking a shot and then getting off an assist for the Bath Water to drain the shot.

Australia hit the first 6 points of the 3rd before Zuev once again bobbed up to hit a jump shot.

5 minutes in and Ted brought down his 10th rebound to give him self a double double and within a minute the Duke hit a basket to also get his own double double.

As the quarter progressed, Australias scrambling man on man defense was getting on top of the Kazakhstans slow patient offence and they begun to increase the gap on their lower ranked opponents.

One wondered what the Indonesians and Iranians scouts in the crowd might have been thinking of Australias motion offence with both Ted and the Duke giving out assists and with 2 minutes left in the quarter, Goodsy become the 3rd Aussie big to hit a 3 pointer for the game.

As 3 quarter time approached, Wang (Wang Chung) who had only spent 7 minutes on the court to this stage, went BANG, with a 3 point Buzzer beater to give the Aussies a 71 to 44 point lead.

The Wombat King started the bench in the 4th and literally seconds in the Polar Bear became the 6th Aussie player of the game to hit a 3.

Wang Chung with head phones on and listening to “Dance Hall days” went banging everywhere in the first 6 minutes of the 4th hitting 14 points.

Not “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”, though as Wang Chungs efforts effectively destroyed any chance the Kazakhstans had of making the next round.

2 minutes left in the game and Polar Bear drew the 6th foul on Zuev who incredibly finished with 38 points from 41 shots, 8 rebounds and just the 1 assist.

4th quarter ended with Wang Chung (19 minutes) again getting a buzzer beater to tie with the Polar Bear (21 minutes) for equal top scorer for the Aussies with 21 points.

Final score Australia 106 to Kazakhstan 69 with The Duke, Ted and Wang Chung being the Aussies best 3 players based on game rankings.

The Wombat Kings attention then turned to the Iranian v Indonesian game where Indonesia had been victorious by 16 points to restrict Australias Point Difference advantage over them selves to just 22 points.

With the entire Kazakhstan squad passed out on the court and receiving intravenous drips after the game from having over exerted them selves, the Wombat King quickly realized that they (The Kazakhstan team) would be easy beats for both the Iranians and Indonesians and that the only way Australia could finish on top of their pool would be if they could win both their remaining games

Thanks Sid always a good read.

We sit 1st in Group A and are into the next stage on the championships.
We take on 3rd and 2nd in our last 2 games and even if we did lose both we can not fall below 3rd spot with the top 4 from each group going into next stage.

There are clear strong sides and not so strong sides in the championships. Most the spots in the final 12 are set in stone. Here is a quick look at who is in and who can still get in for each group. Italics are in, others can still make it.

Group A
Australia 4-0 +167
Indonesia 4-0 +145
Iran 3-1 +72

Kazakhstan 1-3 -41
India 1-3 - 44

Group B

China 4-0 +293
Singapore 4-0 +205
Taiwan 3-1 +132

Macau 2-2 -35
Pakistan 1-3 -129
UAE 1-4 -181

Group C
Hong Kong 4-0 +166
Philippines 4-0 +151

New Zealand 3-2 -64
Nippon 2-2 -16
Malaysia 2-2 -35

Where ever we finish we are going to need to beat some strong sides to make it to the next round. Most the sides are made of mono skill monsters with one team have 7Cs and then PGs. Thankfully our side is a little more balanced and hopefully we can win with this.

Our gameshape is great and players are training well.

Hi Mickyster,

Are you able to give an explanation as to how the remainder of the tournament is structured with regards to games?

Next up is two groups of six. The groups (I think) are 1st and 4th from groups A and C and 2nd and 3rd from group B in one group, with the remaining top four teams in the other group.

Each team plays the others teams in their group once. Top 2 go through to the semis. Winners of the semis obviously play off in the final, and also are through to the world cup.losing semi finalists and the 3rd placed teams from the groups go to the repacharge.

Think that's all right.

That is my understanding. There are a couple of options about how we advance, Talk about that will be kept offsite forum.

I hope that I am not betraying any national secrets here, but one option on how to advance, might be to win all of the remaining games
