Well your right things arn't usually equal but u can work it out, 2-3 zone gives u inside help so could be used against look inside and low post. 3-2 zone give u outside help so could be good against motion and run and gun. 1-3-1 could also be used against motion and run and gun but only if u have good bigs and/or your outside defense needs help. Against patient, base offense and PTB it depends a lot more on what players are involved. If teams are fairly equal overall then man to man could be a good option but if u need help in an area 2-3 zone or 3-2 zone could help. Not sure what would help against princeton or when u would use full court press. I don't really like suggesting a 'best' defense as it really does depend on the players.
