Funny, I study there as well. If you have some questions on which places are good, just bb-mail me. Wouldn't mind giving you some pointers.

my ex lives there but i know some nice places

For in Groningen take a bike (if it doesnt get stolen otherwise buy one at the station)
Inside Groningen busses areokay aswell, if you want further take a train (car is better) but be prepared to meet the GREAT DUTCH NS. which means trains are a dissaster

Stores enough over there, steakhous near three sisters is great, lots of nice pubs and if you can cook, just combine it ;-)

There was a non bb topic but no one writes there lol

A few weeks ago it was decided that Non-BB topics would be allowed in the regular forums. So this is now BB as well as non-BB.

As Snow says: take the bike. If you're gonna stay here for 6 months you should just a cheap bike and a good extra lock (only 1 regular lock means it'll get stolen). As an Erasmus student you probably got housing arranged already and you can probably cook there, which helps you meet the other Erasmus students as well. In amsterdam each house with international students has a few dutch students that are in charge and arrange stuff that you can do. So they can probably help you as well if you have questions.

I personally don't know Groningen that well, but I guess some people here will have good tips for bars and food.

Enjoy your time in Holland.

Crunchy! If you eat fast enough

I would like to add that the railway in The Netherlands is regarded as the best of Europe, however we dutch think otherwise...

That's not correct, statistically about 90% of the train arrives at a station in time. A few years ago the lowest percentage was 82%. In the Netherlands we have sharper rules, we called a train which was more than 2 minutes late, too late. While in the most parts of Europe a train was late when a train was 5 minutes late.

For example England should be horrifying, since none of the material seems to be up to date.

You should come here (Bratislava) and try to take a train to Budapest or even Beograd :) 1-2 hours delays are common. But intrastate links are relatively OK (max 10 minutes late, not so often), but I guess delays are much more common than in NL :) And in Czech Republic, there is the same situation like in Slovakia - just for an illustration.
