Well the 13-14k ones can get a bidding war but once u get to 17-18k competition usually drops off and u should be able to get one with a low sign on fee.

That's true, and if you work out the arithmetic on how fast the salaries rise, if you can get a 13K guy for a signing bonus anywhere lower than ~60K, you'll do better than starting with a 17K guy.

But if the signing bonus for 13K salary guys goes lower after a few weeks into the season based on demand side changes, then you could save even more by waiting. Anyone have a feel for whether this happens?

I got lucky and avoided a bidding war on an advanced trainer last year. I only paid $2000 for a trainer that started around $13300/week.

I guess it's all in the timing. If I remember correctly, there were a few trainers in the $11-$13000 range selling around the same time so his price tag didn't look great by comparison.
