it in the game manual under Standing.

Playoffs, and Promotion and Demotion of Teams
"I've won at every level, except college and pro."

The four top-ranked teams in each conference will make it into the playoffs. There is a one-game elimination match between the 1st- and 4th-ranked teams and between the 2nd- and 3rd-ranked teams in each conference, followed by an elimination match between the two winners. When these champions are decided, the winners from each conference face off in a best-of-three showdown. The winner of the division finals is crowned champion of the division, and is promoted to a higher level of divisions. In divisions VI and lower, both playoff finalists will promote to the higher level of divisions. To keep our community fresh and lively, the next best teams in your division will promote to fill in any Bot-controlled team spots in higher leagues. The league that a team will promote or demote to is random within the division that they are slated to go to.
To help the newly promoted teams compete in the higher leagues, promoting teams will now receive a one-time bonus. Both promoting league champions and teams that promoted from a bot cleanup will get the extra cash, though bot-promoted teams will not experience the same boost to their season ticket holders. The bonus for promoting to a higher league is as follows:

Promotion into DIV I: $ 1 000 000

Promotion into DIV II: $ 500 000

Promotion into DIV III: $ 300 000

Promotion into DIV IV: $ 200 000

Promotion into DIV V: $ 150 000

Promotion into any lower division: $ 150 000

For every league and team it is different, for me going from D.V to D.IV I had almost a 13k tv contract boost, about 12k in merchandise and you will be able to increase prices in this Division, I am getting about 65k more in attendance, but that has to do with expanding my arena during this season.
Think of it as atleast 50k boost per week up to about 110k.
And obviously the 200k in the beginning of the season after you promote.

Note that playoff/relegation game revenue is split between participants, two-thirds to the home team, one third to visiting team.

Teams in either the playoffs or relegation series get the extra game income, but they also have to pay player salaries. Teams in the #5 position (and #8) don't get the added revenue, but they also don't have to pay that last two weeks of salary. Because of this, many managers believe that #5 is a better place to finish, if they feel they don't have a chance to win in the playoffs. The BBs maintain that in the end, the added fan support from making any playoff appearance offset this need to pay salaries, so that #4 is better than #5.

Playoff games do apparently give your players more experience than usual league games, so there's that benefit too (which is of course hard to quantify itself).

Another not so recognized ponit is that PO games give you the most gains in experience. I'd go for at least one match to gain the experience, that helps a lot, specially in close matches.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, especially Tangosz and Manon.

I've decided I'm going to try to win in the playoffs even though I would probably be better off just keeping a low salary and losing in the first round. The team I am facing may be 17-1 (I've had my team for a week), but he has spent most of his cash on guards, almost all his scoring is from outside, and his highest salary is below 9k. I think if I pick up a few solid 10k-12k per week inside scorers (already got a good one cheap) and ~3-4 cheaper outside players with high OD I will have a chance. My goals are to start next season with at least 400k and to never have revenue below salary this season, so those are the restrictions I'm placing on my late free agent title chase.
