Well, that's the bad part about skill drops

They are so random! You can't really control them. That is why I try never to have players who are older than around 33,34. For a backup its ok but if they are your starter that skill drop can really hurt you.
I've always been scared about skills drops since the time I've joint BB, to a point where I used to look at players above 32 with disgust. Of course over time I've come to realize that luck plays quite a major role in skill drops, so I don't mind having a 34 year old guy on my team now(34 being the maximum). You probably were very unlucky. Very few people complain of double drops, some like me are lucky enough to have not experienced even one drop! Also, it is possible that a hidden attribute plays a part in skill drops. I think you may want to consider selling that guy and getting a younger player.
Btw, I've never thought Career Extension really helps, so I've never bothered getting one. I mean, the cost of getting one is quite a bit more than getting a trainer of the same level WITHOUT specialty.
