I dunno what kind of guys you should be looking for as to skill wise but salary wise I've found that once you start getting into the higher leagues, it's the teams that have 8-9+ 20k players (5 starters and 3 or 4 backups) who tend to do better. This is because then you can manage game shape easier because you have solid backups and you play well throughout the game instead of just when your starters are on the floor. You just have to look at it like this:

Eight 25k players (or 200k as a team) will almost always beat a team such as this:

four 50k players (or 200k as a team) because the first team has more depth and better backups.

I've seen with building my team that salary is not that important. It's the skills of the player and how they fit with your team and tactics. Make sure your players have the right skills for the tactics you want to run and you should be successful. I want to have the best possible roster while limiting salaries. Getting a big salary player doesn't mean success if they don't fit your team.

Salaries are not important in the sense that adding salary doesn't necessarily provide an equivalent upgrade to the team. It is important in the sense that getting players with too high salaries can stunt the overall team growth.
