I think that people forget how patient is supposed to work. Patient is supposed to be a balanced offense. Its merely a more selective version of base offense. If base offense looks for a shot with, say, a 40% chance of success, then patient looks for one with a 60% chance. The reason one player ends up taking all the shots is that its very hard to get that good of a shot on a regular basis, so when it doesnt find one it defers to the best shooter.
So to use patient in its most effective form, and the one it was designed for, I think you need no holes in your lineup. If all five players have the ability to shoot, it multiplies your chances of finding a 60% shot by 5. You also need passing across the board so that when these shots do become available, the ball can get there from any position. This is why high OD kills it because if you cant move the ball, you aren't going to find open shots.
IMO, if one player is taking all the shots in your patient offense, or you are using it merely to create a mismatch at one position, you aren't using it right.
